IIT Kanpur Files 107 Intellectual Property Rights; Check Details Here


New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) registers a total of 107 intellectual property rights (IPRs) in 2022, according to NEW DELHI. The institute has submitted the most IPRs in its history for the second year in a row.

80 of the 107 IPRs that were filed were for patents, 23 were for design registrations, 2 were for copyrights, 1 was for a trademark, and 1 was for a US patent. Additionally, over the years, IITK has accrued 917 IPRs in total.

The technologies covered by the patents ranged from nanotechnology to MedTech, which includes a number of healthcare solutions such medication delivery systems based on medicinal plants widely utilised in conventional medicine to treat broken and ill bones. Among the patents IIT Kanpur submitted in 2022 were ones for an optimised transgene for an ocular gene therapy, disease-modifying medication combinations for the treatment of osteoarthritis, and an electrochemical system for glucose sensing.

The granted patents included, among other things, a vermi-bed method for plants in high altitude areas and a solar energy-based root zone heating system. They also included a tactile haptic smart watch for the blind and visually impaired, dry and compact water purification vessels, and E. coli water testing kits.

The "Bhu-Parikshak" soil testing instrument, the most recent technology transfer from IIT Kanpur, gained attention after winning the STEM Impact Awards 2022 for effective technology transfer with a positive socioeconomic impact.

Abhay Karandikar, director of IIT Kanpur, stated in a statement about the accomplishment: "We're thrilled to extend the run by submitting 107 - 100+ IPRs in our institute's history for two consecutive years. This demonstrates the institute's R&D activities have grown exponentially, and the research areas have become more diverse. Our faculty, researchers, and students are dedicated to participating in thoughtful discussions that may lead to significant discoveries that may help create an Atmanirbhar Bharat across sectors.
