IIT Kanpur Rolls Out New MTech Degrees in Cognitive Systems and Unmanned Aerial Systems

New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has approved and rolled out two new MTech programs in Unmanned Aerial Systems Engineering and Cognitive Systems Engineering.

The curriculum on Cognitive Systems is the first of its kind in the nation, making IIT Kanpur the first institution in India to provide a specific MTech program in Drone Technology. The newly-approved MTech programs will be available from the next academic session.

IIT Kanpur MTech in Unmanned Aerial Systems

The Department of Aerospace Engineering will provide the interdisciplinary MTech program in Unmanned Aerial Systems Engineering. Students will have to finish 150 credits worth of coursework and thesis research over the course. The coursework will be divided into 78 credits of coursework and 72 credits of thesis work on a cutting-edge technology or research topic pertaining to drones or unmanned aerial systems.

Students will have the chance to concentrate on fields including Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Design and Aeromechanics and UAV autonomy through the course curriculum within two years. The program would be delivered by professors from a variety of fields, including civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, and aerospace engineering.

IIT Kanpur MTech in Cognitive Systems

The newly established Department of Cognitive Science will provide the MTech program in Cognitive Systems. Modern research instruments for studying the mind and brain can be found in the department. The recently approved initiative will support the investigation and implementation of cognitive principles in areas including Translational Neuroscience, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Natural Language Processing (NLP), and others.

IIT Kanpur MTech Courses on the Foundations Of Cognitive Science, Empirical Methodology, and Modelling would all be included in the curriculum. In order to ensure higher societal and industrial impact, students would receive training in the design and development of technological solutions based on cognitive science.

Commenting on the introduction of the new MTech programs, the director of IIT Kanpur, Prof. Abhay Karandikar, said that the institute is proud to announce the introduction of these two new MTech programs at IIT Kanpur, which will present exceptional opportunities for the students to pursue cutting-edge research and development in emerging fields.

The Students who complete the new MTech degree in Unmanned Aerial Systems Engineering will be prepared to lead in the field of drone technology, which has many uses in industries like Agriculture, Transportation, and Defense. With a focused interdisciplinary collaboration across multiple academic institutions, training centers, and skilling bodies, this program is in line with MeitY's nationwide push on capacity building for drone technology, he said.

The introduction of the MTech program in Cognitive Systems is a first of its kind, and Prof. Karandikar continued, and said that it will aid students in developing a deeper comprehension of the human mind and brain and in applying cognitive principles in fields like human-computer interaction, education, and neuroscience.

Because of the program's focus on bridging the gap between fundamental research and applications, the IIT Kanpur Faculty is convinced that the students will be well-equipped to handle the difficulties that industry and society will provide.
