New Delhi: Indian School of Business (ISB) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Mission Shakti, Government of Odisha. With this collaboration, both corporations aim to promote women's economic emancipation and rural prosperity.
As per the officials, the Memorandum of Understanding was signed in the presence of Sujatha Karthikeyan, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Department of Mission Shakti, Government of Odisha, and Professor Ashwini Chhatre, Executive Director of Bharti Institute of Public Policy (BIPP), Indian School of Business.
This collaboration is an important step in the direction of Mission Shakti's goal of transforming Odisha into a place of equal possibilities where women are given the freedom to live with respect and prosperity. The signed copies of the MoU were exchanged in front of Shri Naveen Patnaik, the Chief Minister of Odisha.
Through women-led community enterprises, ISB and Mission Shakti will work together throughout the course of this three-year MoU to create a thriving and sustainable forest economy in Odisha, beginning with the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabrangpur, Rayagada, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar.
Professor Ashwini Chhatre, Executive Director of Bharti Institute of Public Policy (BIPP) discussed the partnership with Mission Shakti and said, "The forest economy, anchored in secure tenure, and built on women-centric community-owned enterprises, is a triple-win model".
"It has the potential to improve the lives of nearly 2 million women in the six districts while providing the industry with secure, visible, traceable, and sustainable sources of supply. He declared, "It's good for the economy, the environment, and the people", he added.
The ISB's model for boosting the forest economy in Odisha includes Community Forest Resource Rights (CFR) in forested landscapes, technology support for leveraging economies of scale through aggregation and mechanisation, and direct market linkage with significant consumers of forest-based industrial raw materials
As the nodal department within the Government of Odisha, Mission Shakti will enable the mobilisation of the Women Self Help Groups (WSHGs) and implementation of Community Forest Resource Rights across the six districts.
Along with facilitating technology development and direct market linkage, ISB will collaborate with mission Shakti to: a) operationalise security of tenure through CFR titles; b) build the capacity, promote financial inclusion, and develop the skills of WSHGs so that by the end of three years.
Built on the three pillars of security of tenure, economies of scale, and assured market linkages, ISB-Initiative BIPP's on the Forest Economy (IoFE) aims to create a landscape-scale sustainable and thriving forest economy by facilitating sustainable management of forests and improved livelihoods for more than 200 million forest-dependent people throughout India.
The methodology is now prepared to scale up and expand out quickly with pilots now being conducted in Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and the Malkangiri district of Odisha.
