Jadavpur University Allots Rooms at Technology Bhavan to Conduct Classes; Check Details Here

Jadavpur University (JU) has allotted rooms to 3 departments in the Technology Bhavan for conducting PG and UG classes. These 3 departments are that of physics, chemistry and mathematics.

The decision was taken after HoD physics sent a letter to Suranjan Das VC, Jadavpur University on November 26 stating that it would be impossible to conduct PG classes in the Covid-19 pandemic situation without any additional rooms.

A Jadavpur University official said that a discussion among all 7 HoDs and VC took place on December 14. During the discussion, it was agreed that the newly constructed Technological Bhavan will serve the purpose of providing extra space to make sure that social distancing norms will be followed once classes resume.

The official said, “We are going to provide rooms on the fourth floor of the building. Let the heads decide whether labs could be also carved out of the rooms.”

The Bhavan will be shared between the physics, chemistry and mathematics departments. Each of the departments has been allotted 2 rooms in the building. These 3 departments have the largest number of students at Jadavpur University.

The load of the classes will now be shared between UG and PG science building and the Technological Bhavan. The official also added that the requirements of other departments will be fulfilled in phases.

A physics teacher said, “For the 45 students studying each in MSc first year and MSc second year, there are two classrooms and three rooms which serve as labs.”

The crunch of space at Jadavpur University is so severe that 4 to 5 students share a single instrument. Benches in the classrooms have been stacked to provide accommodation for all 45 students of the physics department.

The situation is not much better in the mathematics and chemistry departments who have 70 and 41 students at master’s level. At the undergraduate level, this number is almost twice as big.

This forced the 7 HoDs of the science department to write to the VC on December 2. They said in a letter, “We request the administration to take the necessary steps to enhance the infrastructural facilities as we have been experiencing difficulties in running our undergraduate courses with the increased numbers of intakes over the years.”

To the letter of the HoDs, the VC replied that Jadavpur University was addressing the problem of space as best as they could. For this purpose, a space committee was formed with the purpose of identifying the building where rooms could be allocated.

A member of the space committee said that the identified Technological Bhanavn was developed to house the Centre of Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facilities (SAIF). The University was identified by the center as one of the 4 SAIF centers in November 2018.
