Jadavpur University Scraps 65th Convocation in view of COVID-19 Pandemic


Jadavpur University Convocation 2020 will not be held this year owing to COVID-19 pandemic. The university decided to distribute degree certificates to the graduating batches in online mode. 

Jadavpur University has been organising its convocations in the open-air theatre within the campus on December 24, every year. The executive council of the varsity held a virtual meeting on Sunday, December 6, and decided upon cancelling convocation plans this year.

The varsity has not even charged convocation fee of INR 500 from 4,000 students graduating this year. JU collects this fee to avail convocation gowns and laminated degree certificate for all recipients.

Meanwhile, speaking on this, Vice-Chancellor, Suranjan Das asserted, “We will not be able to hold the convocation because of the pandemic. We will upload the digital version of the degree certificates on the National Academic Depository so that the students could download them on December 24. The university will issue a notification informing the graduating students about the mechanism.”

National Academic Depository is a database maintained digitally that includes academic awards offered by the Ministry of Education. Das added, “If a recipient wants a hardcopy of the certificate, the university will have it delivered to him or her through courier.”

An official said, “A committee comprising the Vice-Chancellor and the Deans of Engineering, Science and Humanities has been constituted to take a final decision on this issue.” 

He added, medical experts, have been predicting more virulent breakouts in winter. Hence, it would not be pleasant advice to assemble students on the campus, at this juncture.

However, one of the council members said that the VC will decide regarding organising a customary program on December 24th and award certificates in a staggered manner on that day.

Calcutta University, Presidency University to Follow Suit 

As the news to do away with the convocation at Jadavpur University is rife, Calcutta University also informed their displeasure in planning a traditional convocation ceremony amid a pandemic.

An official of CU stated, “The pandemic is raging even in winter. So, it is unlikely the ceremony will be held in physical mode. We will decide on the alternative mechanism, soon.”

Meanwhile, Presidency University is likely to distribute degree certificates digitally via National Academic Depository. 

The university has done it for the current year and will follow the same pattern, next year as well. Presidency University had scrapped its convocation for 2020 which is usually held in February.
