Jadavpur University to jointly study the impact of SEZs in India, along with 4 international institutions


The Economics Department of Jadavpur University is planning to collaborate with four leading global institutions to study the impact of SEZs (Special Economic Zone) amid the prevailing economic inequality and its reasonable increase due to globalization across the country.

As per the reports, the Jadavpur University researchers will be working with Kiel Institute of World Economy Germany, National Institute of Socio-Economic Information and Broadcast, Vietnam, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, University of Ghana. Swedens Bank Riksbankens Jubileumsfond will fund the research.

The reports further displayed that the objective of the prime thrust of the research titled "Do SEZs (Special Economic Zones) reduce economic inequality ?." 

It is to find out the SEZ impact in the areas it is established and whether it has helped in decreasing social and economic inequality across the country.

There are seven working SEZs in the state at Manikanchan, Falta, Wipro, etc. The five of these SEZs are under IT, while the remaining is part of the manufacturing sector. The total area is 500 acres for SEZ.

The suggested research will be based on the three countries, including Vietnam, India, and Ghana. All three countries are at varying stages of globalization.

Although SEZ in Vietnam gained success, it has brought moderate outcomes in India. In our county, we have witnessed failure in a few places. 

Additionally, in Ghana, it has been a complete failure. The research is most likely to end by 2023.
