With the new semester classes due to begin this month, Jadavpur University has decided to provide android phones and data packs to students who do not have them. The final semester examination of Arts and Science students will be held from 1 to 10 October.

The number of students who need the facilities is being decided by a committee of the university after the students’ union provided their own survey figure. The authorities are trying to complete the procedure at the earliest.

Digital classes for Arts and Science students will begin on 14 September, while engineering classes will begin on 25 September.

Classes will be given on a virtual platform on Google. Audio and video clips of lectures and course content will be uploaded to a secure section of the university portal. The teachers of the concerned department will be able to access the section and share the links of the files via PDF with students who have access to the Internet.

As of now, students with Internet connectivity are expected to share the contents with those without it. Once the other students get the facilities, they will also be able to participate in the classes.

The university will provide mobile phones and Internet packs from its own funds raised from contributions from its alumni, faculty, and so on.

The pro-vice-chancellor said that the university will hold the final semester examinations in a non-contact, digital mode. Questions will be sent through email before the examinations. Students will have to download the questions and answer them on a paper sheet in two hours. After that, they must mail it in the form of an attachment.

Students will be given some extra time in case of Internet issues. However, that cannot be extended indefinitely. Students can dial a helpline number if they face any difficulties.

The university decided to hold the exams after the University Grants Commission allowed the state Higher education department to hold final-semester examinations in October.
