Jadavpur University to run helplines; final semester exams from October 1

According to the Jadavpur University official notice released on Tuesday, a helpline service would be available for the students who find it difficult to upload answer scripts immediately after exams.

The notice also mentioned that Jadavpur University will be conducting the semester exams for final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students from 1 October 2020 to 11 October 2020.

Students will receive question papers through email with helpline numbers mentioned on them.

Also, Suranjan Das, the vice-chancellor, said that a coordinator would be assigned to check the operations of the helpline while mentioning the potential problems a student might face during uploading answer scripts and emailing them back.

Das further stated, “A power outage can happen at the time of mailing back the scripts or some technical glitch in a cybercafe can come in the way of mailing them back.”

“In that case, a student can call on the number and explain the kind of constraint he/she is facing. We will decide on the kind of assistance they can be provided with based on the nature of the difficulty they are facing… everything will be done following rules and regulations,” he added.

A university official also mentioned, “A student can be given some additional time for the situation to improve so that he/she can send the scripts.”

The university will use a courier service to collect the scripts if the problem still occurred. Officials have already approached some courier companies for the smooth delivery of scripts. In order to avail the service, the student must intimidate the university citing genuine reasons for the change in mode.

Partha Pratim Roy, a teacher of the physics department, gave another alternative quoting, “If a student says he/she is facing difficulty in mailing back the scripts, he/she can be asked to send them over WhatsApp.”

VC Das, regarding the helpline, said, “Details of the helplines will be uploaded on the university’s website.”

The official notice signed by Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, a pro-VC, said, “Exams will be conducted in non-contact distance mode using the digital platform to maintain distancing rules during the pandemic.”

The guideline also specified that visually impaired candidates would send their answer scripts using voice mail.

For the Arts and science stream, exams would be of two hours duration. Only an additional hour would be given to MSc Biotechnology and MSc Instrumentation Science students.

During the exam, students need to mark all pages numerically and write their roll numbers on every page.

Moreover, to remove the digital divide, the university has recharged the data packs of 800-odd students immediately.

In this regard, an official said, “Since digital platforms will be used to upload answer scripts, we believe some final-year students, included among the 800-odd students, will need the data packs.”

To conduct the exam smoothly, Das said, “Elaborate arrangements have been made so that no student misses out on the exams.”
