Jadavpur University to reduce its summer vacation in order to complete the syllabus before the commencement of the second year in the month of August.
Jadavpur University (JU), Kolkata is planning to curtail the summer vacations for first-year engineering students to 7 days in order to make the best of time lost in the pandemic situation. The new session will be commencing from January 11 via online mode, which was supposed to be conducted in August 2020.
Usually, the summer vacations last for one-and-a-half months from the third week of May till the first week of July, but the varsity will use summer vacation to complete the syllabus for the first year in this academic session. After recommendations from UGC, JU will conduct regular classes from July for the second year.

In view of the pandemic situation, there has been a great impact in the first year syllabus, to redeem the situation the engineering and technology faculty council held a meeting on December 20 and concluded to cut down the summer vacation to 7 days.
As per the academic calendar, the summer vacation will start from July 14-24, 2021 and first semester examination will be held in April so that the second year classes can start afresh from the month of August.
Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur and NIT, Durgapur commenced its classes from December 1 and offered admissions on the basis of rank secured at the JEE-main exam. While JU was unable to start classes even though the three-phased centralised counselling conducted by the state JEE board had ended in October.
Reason For Not Conducting Classes at JU
As per AICTE, all the engineering institutions are to conduct an induction session before classes start. But JU observed 487 vacant seats out of 1,253 BTech seats after the three-phased centralised counselling by the state JEE board. JU had to conduct its own counselling program for the remaining seats.
Induction programs are conducted so as to reinforce the fundamental concepts and strengthen language skills required for technical education. JU observed one in three BTech seats remaining vacant this academic year and organised decentralised counselling as it is the only premier engineering institution in Bengal.

The West Bengal government has not given the green light to conduct regular classes yet, so the classes will be held online for now.
The University Executive Council is worried about the quality of education via online classes as it lacks the involvement of workshops and labs required for the curriculum. They are eagerly waiting for the approval of physical classes.
Further, The summer vacation for 3rd-year students will not be affected as they have mandatory internship programs and the academic calendar may have changed depending on the situation.
