Jamia Millia Islamia Introduces Masters in Design Program; Details Here


Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University has introduced a new postgraduate degree, Masters in Design (MDes programme) for the current academic year 2021-22 in a virtual orientation ceremony today. 

Professor Najma Akhtar, Vice-chancellor, JMI launched the new MDes programme during the virtual inauguration. The university has also introduced a new department, Department of Design and Innovation, under which the MDes programme will be offered. 

Initially, the department will offer the postgraduate course, Masters in Design, to its students. However, the university has planned to launch more degree courses in the undergraduate and research level in the future. 

JMI MDes Programme 2021: Highlights 

Jamia Millia Islamia's new Masters in Design course will focus on the following areas: Interaction Design, Product Design, and Communication Design. 

In order to provide experiential learning to the students along with preparing them for their career prospects and employment opportunities in the country, the idea to create a new department was rooted. 

The University inaugurated the Department of Design and Innovation and the MDes programme with two core priorities, 

  • To inculcate a culture and practice of critical design thinking in the citizens of tomorrow. 
  • To build future leaders and entrepreneurs who will have a strong foundation in the field of design innovation with requisite skills to undertake research and transform new ideas into tangible actions.

Jamia Millia Islamia Courses 2021 

The Vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia has assigned Prof Farhat Basir Khan to lead the setting up of the newly formed department. 

Prof Khan has an experience of leadership in academia and professional practice for over three decades. Addressing the inaugural ceremony, he said that the department was set up to creatively address the increasing demand of the professionals and innovators in the country. 

The design professionals who will build and create a business with a purpose to bridge this gap and those who will think out-of-the-box and provide creative solutions to suit the needs of a country with 1.4 billion people with considerable inequalities, Khan added. 

During the ceremony, Professor Najma Akhtar, Vice-chancellor, JMI said that the dedication to deliver the best experiential education and staying abreast with the changing trends in technology, pedagogy, and innovation is what makes JMI stand out amongst others. 

Further, the department of design and innovation will lead in its approach to education, teaching and learning alongside attracting the best talent from industry and academia, Najma concluded. 

Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Tasneem Fatma and Registrar Dr Nazim Husain Jafri were also present at the inaugural session of the new masters programme.
