New Delhi: Jammu University introduced a department of journalism and media studies on Saturday, which was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Manoj Dhar, who described it as a long-awaited aspiration of the university.

He stated that, in addition to normal classroom lectures, the course would involve ongoing engagement with the top journalists in the nation, frequent workshops, exposure to the newest technology, special lectures, hands-on-the-job experimentation, and institutional visits.

Dhar spoke on the formation of a Centre for Media Studies, which will include an Oral History Cell, a Language Lab, and a Community Radio Station, as part of his larger vision for the Department.

He also highlighted that the practical component of the training will be essential.

Prof Dhar thanked Sh Manoj Sinha, Hon'ble Governor of J&K and Chancellor of Jammu University, for his assistance and advice.

Dhar said, "All these components are also in the final stage of their completion. These components, once functional, shall become nodes where students can hone their necessary skill and the practical experiences of handling the latest equipment".

He continued by saying that the Department would be a significant feather in the university's crown and that the graduates will ideally become "our brand ambassadors" in the future.

Prof Shyam Narayanan Lal, Head of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, went into great depth regarding how the department came to be. Dr Vinay Thusoo, Coordinator, Department of Journalism and Media Studies, presided over the event and gave a formal vote of thanks.

Among others, Prof Naresh Padha, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof Rajni Kant, Director, College Development Council, Prof Satnam Kour, Director, Directorate of Distance Education, Prof Pankaj Srivastav, President, JUTA, Prof Prakash Anathal, Dean Students’ Welfare, Sanjeev Mahajan, Joint Registrar and Administrator, GZSAC, Dr Neeraj Sharma, Special Secretary to Vice-Chancellor, Dr Dauood Iqbal Baba, Director, Sports and Physical Education, Dr Imran Farooq, PRO to VC, Suresh Sharma, Executive Engineer and Dr Akhilesh Sharma, Laisasom Officer and students of the Department also attended the event.
