JNU to Conduct Fourth Convocation Ceremony Virtually in November

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will be holding the fourth annual convocation event in online mode in the month of November.

The Executive Council of Jawaharlal Nehru University ratified the holding of the fourth convocation. The Vice-Chancellor of the University M Jagdesh Kumar said that convocation is a special moment of a student's life and celebrating the scholarly achievement after years of hard work by the university, family and friends.

VC Jagdesh further added that events like convocation enhance the sense of belonging among students to their alma mater. But unlike previous years, the convocation will be a virtual event following the safety concerns of students amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

The JNU Registrar Pramod Kumar informed that a notification regarding convocation will soon be released on the official website, where students have to register themselves to be a part of the virtual convocation.

The first convocation ceremony of JNU was held in 1972 which however got discontinued for a long time, due to the controversial speech of then students' union president. JNU again continued holding the convocation ceremony from 2018. 

JNU Teachers' Association (JNUTA) Secretary Surajit Mazumdar shared his viewpoint and said, "Faculty, in general, has no role in the convocation. We are more concerned about the issues related to teaching and learning than the ceremony. The JNU administration's approach is the exact opposite."

The other educational institutions like IIT Bombay and IIT Gandhinagar also conducted the virtual convocation ceremony amid the pandemic situation.
