New Delhi: Three years after handing off the duty to the National Testing Agency, Jawaharlal Nehru University has decided to resume conducting internal entrance exams for PhD admission beginning with the following academic year. The decision was announced by Vice Chancellor Santishree D Pandit.
According to the Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, the traditional admissions process was supported by the majority of students. The university must once again take on the duty of administering the admission exam, according to students and educators.
In a news conference, Santishree D Pandit stated, "We will return to the Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Examination for PhD admission as the majority opinion is that for PhD, critical analysis is required and MCQ does not allow that."
The test has been conducted for the previous three years by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Candidates who wish to apply for admission to PhD programmes were required to take the computer-based test. The issues with the NTA-based exam have come to light over the past year from both teachers and students.
The JNU Teachers' Association claimed in a statement earlier this year that the university's elite PhD programmes were being admitted with shockingly shoddy procedures. The students' union also organised a protest demanding that universities regain their academic autonomy and reclaim control over the administration of exams.
