Kashmir University to establish Academy of Kashmiri Language to promote Kashmiri language, literature; Check Details Here


The University of Kashmir will form an Academy of Kashmiri Language soon in line with the recommendations of the New Education Policy-2020, to encourage Kashmiri language and literature, Prof Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, stated on November 3, 2020.

Prof Talat Ahmad, while addressing the inaugural session of a two-day seminar at The University of Kashmir, “Contemporary Trends in Kashmiri Literary Criticism,” he stated, “The NEP-2020 emphasizes the promotion of regional languages.”

He also said, “In this context, we have submitted our proposal to the honorable chancellor on setting up an Academy of Kashmiri Language in this University to boost the promotion of the Kashmiri language in a big way. This Academy would lead to more funds and the creation of more faculty positions.

The Department of Kashmiri organized the national-level seminar. During the seminar, Prof Talat asked the authorities to popularize the Academy for more students to learn the Kashmiri language.

He assured his full support to the Department of Kashmiri and informed, “This Academy can offer short courses on translations so that the rich treasure of Kashmiri literature, philosophy and culture reaches the whole world.”

It would be good if students from other places come here and learn the Kashmiri language so that people across the country understand the rich Kashmiri culture and literature and the great works of noted Kashmiri scholars,” he further added.

He also said, “Literature shapes up the society, and that makes its promotion among the masses important.”

During the seminar, the V-C released three books, i.e., ‘Anhar’, a journal of the Kashmiri Department, ‘Kashri Adbuk Tawareek’ by Prof Shafi Souq, and ‘Pair Zan’ by Zahoor Hygami.

Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir, KU Registrar, stated that constructive criticism provides the base of fine academic and literary discourse. The current seminar is an excellent idea to work in that direction.

Prof Shafi Shauq, Kashmiri scholar and former Head, Department of Kashmiri, fascination upon the Kashmiri literary critics to 'benefit from the literary theories in vogue in the East and the West.'

Implying to schools of criticism famous in the Kashmiri language, he expressed that literary critics should focus on literature and look deep into the foundation where artifact reveals itself.

Prof Shafi Shauq added, “The linguistic structure, the verbal icon and the narrator of the artifact must be recognized in the first place, and only then a genuine appreciation of an artifact is possible.”

Prof Mafooza Jan, Head, Department of Kashmiri, expressed that the seminar aims to raise new questions and find fresh insights into existing areas that are not fully developed in the field.
