Kerala University Affiliated Colleges to Reopen for UG Final Year, PG Students from Monday (January 4, 2021)

Kerala University Affiliated Colleges are making the last minute preparations to reopen for UG final year and PG students from Monday, January 4, 2021, as per the state government regulations.

For a week, management of all the affiliated colleges of Kerala University have been preparing for students to begin offline classes after 9 months since the lockdown was imposed in March 2020.

Higher Education Minister K.T. Jaleel had conducted several rounds of meetings so that no stones remain unturned for arrangements to reopen 182 affiliated colleges and 44 departments at KU in wake of COVID-19 pandemic. Offline classes will begin for final year UG batches as well as for all PG batches.

In accordance with COVID-19 protocol, all college councils have strictly mandated classes and official work to take place between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. Also, attendance has to be restricted to 50% strength of the entire class. Apart from sanitising classrooms, thermal screeners have been facilitated to each college.

Committees have been set up in several colleges for managing COVID-19 protocols. Such committees include teachers and students to monitor students’ movement within the campuses.

Speaking on this, Pro Vice Chancellor P.P. Ajayakumar asserted, KU affiliated colleges need to take a call and arrange classes in a phased manner. Usually, the strength of PG classes remain considerably low as of roughly 15 students in science and 30 in arts courses.

In such cases, maintaining social distancing will not be a tough job to attain. However, for UG courses, batches having strength more than 50 need to be split and classes have to be arranged accordingly.

Despite all the arrangements, day scholars are expected to face major transportation issues, as larger sections of them avail public transport or live far away. At this juncture, lack of hostels will also pose problems. The university has only commenced its allotment process to its hostels for PG freshers.
