Kolkata College Admission 2020: Reserved Seats Opened Up for Waiting List Candidates; Read Details Here

Kolkata College Admission 2020: Many colleges in Kolkata have opened up reserved seats which were vacant, for waiting list candidates to apply for admission.

For now, several colleges have already opened up seats, while some have begun de-reserving seats so that general category student can apply for desired colleges and courses. However, such colleges which have vacancies even in the general category chose not to do so.

Presidency University has already created a list of seats drawn out of de-reserving sheets. The provisional merit list will be released soon for 32 seats which have been opened up.

A member of the admission committee said the university will not permit any fresh applications to fill the vacant seats. Candidates who earlier made it to the waiting list can apply, only.

As per West Bengal State Higher Education Institutions (Reservation in Admissions) Act 2013, a certain clause mentions, de-reserving seats of backward classes is permitted after approval from the respective community.

This option can be exercised in case reserved category seats do not fill up after admissions sare over. The general rule, however, applies that colleges in the state have to reserve a certain percentage of the total seats for reserved categories.

As per previous reports, on an average, 30% seats in Calcutta University’s affiliated colleges are being left vacant. Likewise, Seth Anandaram Jaipuria College has already received takers for the list de-reserved seats, though some still remain vacant.

The principal of Seth Anandaram Jaipuria College asserted “A college can apply for de-reservation of seats only after the admission process gets over and the authorities are sure no one else would get through. Before the process, the authorities have to issue multiple notices, informing about the availability of seats in the reserved category.”

Colleges like Bethune, Lady Brabourne and Scottish Church, too, have opened up seats in some subjects. “General-category seats have filled up, but some reserved seats were vacant,” said an official at Bethune College. “It doesn’t make much sense as over one-third general-category seats are vacant,” said a Principal of South Kolkata based college.
