Madras University: Semester Exams to be Held Online; Check Details Here

The University of Madras has decided to hold semester exams in a completely online mode. The exams were scheduled to begin on December 21, were shifted to online mode to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

This decision was taken by the University of Madras because of concerns over student safety. The duration of the exam is likely to be three hours. In a normal course, the semester exams would have been held in the month of November.

However, due to the spread of Covid-19, institutes all over the country were shut. Because of this, the completion of the syllabus was delayed, and ultimately, the exam schedule had to be shifted.

The University took this decision in a Syndicate meeting held on December 4. However, not all the members of the Syndicate were convinced that online exams could be conducted.

A member of the Syndicate said that many students had problems with internet connectivity. In addition, there was also a lot of confusion regarding the uploading of answer scripts and the downloading of the question papers. As such, it would be problematic to hold online exams.

According to him, offline exams were much more feasible even with the current pandemic situation. Another member suggested that the students be allowed to take offline exams on choice.

There were some concerns about whether candidates would be able to travel. However, he said that those who are able to travel should be allowed to go for the pen and paper mode of examination. Similarly, those who cannot come to the examination center should be allowed to give online exams.

Another member, who was from one of the affiliated colleges suggested that colleges should be given authority over the exams. He said that individual colleges should be allowed to choose the evaluation method, the mode of exam, and the marking scheme of the candidates.

An official from University of Madras said that due to the extension of the payment of exam fee till December 9, exams were also delayed. He further said that the University also needed some time to deal with the issue of hall tickets and candidate enrollment.
