Madras University to Reserve 1 UG Seat for Transgender Students in Each College from 2022

New Delhi: Madras University has come up with another progressive move by deciding to reserve one free seat in each of its affiliated college for transgender students. This is going to be effective from the academic year 2022-23.

Madras University to Reserve 1 UG Seat for Transgender Students in Each College from 2022

Madras University has taken this decision considering the regular harassment and discrimination the transgender community has to face everyday. This decision is taken to encourage higher education among the marginalised community and curb the discrimination.

Tamil Nadu has often talked about how citizens should be treated equally by the law irrespective of gender, caste, religion or sexuality. Besides, quite often the transgender community suffers from social and economic backwardness.

As per official reports, the university has been already providing free seats to students from the marginalised communities. During 2021-22, the varsity has enrolled more than 330 students from poor economic backgrounds.

While commenting on this decision, S. Gowri, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, has stated that the transgender students will be offered one seat in each of the 131 Arts and Science colleges affiliated to the Madras University.

More often students from the LGBTQ community have to give up their education out of compulsion from the larger society. To prevent these unfortunate instances, previously, the varsity announced that the transgender students can study postgraduate courses free of cost in the university affiliated colleges. It decided to reserve seats in all UG and PG courses in the affiliated colleges.

Kalki Subramaniam, transgender activist, writer, poet and painter has welcomed this move by the university.

“I am happy that awareness is growing among people regarding transgender people and our situation. I have always been a votary for higher education to transgender people and the Madras University has taken a step in the right direction”, as explained by Subramaniam.
