Madras University’s IDE Gets Nod from UGC to Offer B.Ed Degree Program, Check Details Here

University of Madras’s Institute of Distance Education received approval on Monday from UGC to establish a two-year B Ed programme.

Former Vice-Chancellor P. Duraisamy of Madras University had initiated the effort to commence the course in 2017, but it was postponed due to the University's non-compliance with several norms of the regulatory authorities. 

While the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) accepted the proposal in 2019, the University had to wait for the approval from the University Grants Commission.

An official informed, “We got approval in 2019 but in 2020 we could not offer the programme. Due to the Pandemic, the UGC cancelled the approval process last year. Very few universities managed to get B.Ed programmes. We applied again in October last and received the approval today.”

The varsity has received permission to enrol 500 students per session. Admission to Madras University’s IDE programmes is held twice a year, i.e., in January and June.

However, the pandemic had caused a delay in the completion of the academic year admission, which was postponed till December. The calendar year is most likely to start from February consequently, the official added.

The official further stated that the institute has to complete some compulsory paperwork following which it would commence the admission process. 

Madras University already has permission to provide 37 programmes through IDE, including 15 undergraduate and 22 postgraduate courses in English as well as Tamil medium.

Apart from B Ed, Six additional UG/PG programmes have also received UGC approval. The courses include geography, medical sociology, sociology and music.

Teachers have been appointed temporarily to teach the BEd courses. According to NCTE norms, some faculty from other departments had also been substituted to the IDE, the official informed.

Earlier, the varsity was unable to recruit faculty as the admission process was tangled in litigation. The court has now announced in favour of the Madras University, but it is yet to begin the recruitment procedure.

As per the official, the UGC’s approval is provisional and depends upon the University's responses to queries disclosed by the UGC.
