The Maharashtra State Government has proposed to increase the total number of medical seats in the Maharashtra medical colleges. According to the proposal, around 601 medical seats will be added to the pre-existing number of seats in MD/MS courses for the academic year 2022-23.
Based on the current infrastructure, the medical seats will be increased across 15 medical colleges. The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has already accepted the proposal to increase 23% PG seats. Overall, 577 seats out of the total 601 seats have been proposed in Government medical colleges and the remaining seats for the Civic-run colleges in Pune.
The B J Medical College in Pune will witness an increase of 63 seats in 15 subjects. While JJ Hospital's Grant Medical College will add 92 seats. It has been notified that the new seats will be added up in courses including Anesthesia, Community Medicine, Pathology, and General Surgery.

The state government has already sent the proposal of increasing PG seats to the National Medical Commission (NMC). The proposal will introduce postgraduate medical courses in Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in Jalgaon, Gondia, and Chandrapur. Colleges which offer only UG medical courses will also receive few seats in PG courses.
Dr T P Lahane, director at Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) responded to the proposal by saying that more PG medical seats will increase their manpower and the DMER has proposed to increase the seats by 25% in colleges which satisfies the NMC criteria for beds and faculty.
