In an unprecedented move, the West Bengal government has decided to temporarily halt internet access in some portions of the state on the days of the class 10 state board exam, beginning Monday, in order to prevent cheating.

According to a WBBSE official, the decision was made in response to allegations of claimed leaks of question papers via social media platforms from various exam centres in many districts, including Malda and Murshidabad, within an hour of the start of exams in 2019 and 2020.

The WBBSE is in charge of conducting the exam, which was cancelled last year owing to the COVID-19 outbreak. According to the notification, intelligence reports have been received that internet transmission and voice over internet telephony might be utilised for "unlawful operations in some places in the coming days.

The notification also stated, “An assessment of the inputs gives reason to believe that such unlawful activities are likely to occur in the absence of preventive measures”.
