MBBS Students to Complete Internship in their Own Colleges: MUHS Clarifies

New Delhi: The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has clarified that Medical students in the state must complete their internship from the hospitals attached to the colleges from where they are pursuing the degree.

On Monday, MUHS issued a circular related to the new internship guidelines issued by the National Medical Council (NMC). Earlier, MBBS students were allowed to pursue their internship from other colleges where they were studying. However, as per the Draft Regulations for ‘Compulsory Rotating Internship 2021’ issued by the NMC in July, 2021, this won’t be possible anymore.

All Indian Medical Graduates shall complete their entire period of compulsory rotating internship training (CRMI) in the institution where they have pursued and completed their Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)”, as stated by the Draft by the NMC.

The MUHS has clarified the same and informed the candidates that they will also have to follow the Draft issued by the NMC.

The provision made available to students until last year where one could pursue their internship at other universities in India, including deemed universities/colleges in Maharashtra, is now being discontinued. Students will have to complete their 12-month internship at the university they are enrolled in,” the MUHS circular further stated.

According to the concerned students and their parents, this new rule will definitely lead to loss of choice of preference in colleges to complete the mandatory internship. As per the earlier time of ‘externship’, the students tend to choose Government medical colleges with heavy patient flow in hospitals to get maximum exposure and get used to the work atmosphere.

The flow of patients is always high in government hospitals compared to private or even deemed institutes. This is very important for students who just want to learn the best during internship. Discontinuing this rule will put us in a tight spot,” as explained by Abhinav Tare, a final year MBBS student.

Many parents also have stated that the earlier rule of “externship” was student-friendly. The loss of it might affect the chance to help the students receiving proper exposure to all kinds of patients.

In a notice released in November, 2021, the NMC, however, clarified that due to the difficulty caused by the current COVID 19 situation, the internship can be completed at another NMC-approved medical college hospital.
