Medical Colleges yet to Receive Exam Guidelines from MCI

The Medical Council of India is yet to issue fresh directives to medical colleges regarding examinations.

The Principal and Dean of VCSG Government Medical College Uttarakhand said, “The institute has suspended all the internal, external and other exams till any guidelines are issued by the MCI. The directives are expected to come out by mid-August post which the decision will be taken.”

The mode and manner of the examinations will be based on the guidelines issued by the MCI, according to an associate professor of Shaheed Hasan Khan Mewati Government Medical College. If the situation is unfavourable for holding examinations at the campus, the institute may consider virtual assessment, he said.

The delay in the examination might affect the careers of the final-year students as it will have an effect on their internships, postgraduate admissions and jobs. It is important that they take their examinations on time since they have to take an internship afterwards. Timely assessment and internship are two key factors in the students completing their course within the stipulated tenure.

If the course is extended, it may result in the students missing out on the NEET PG and job opportunities. On the other hand, the examinations for junior students can be adjusted during their five-year course.

While many colleges are waiting for guidelines from the MCI, institutes such as AIIMS Patna and Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) have decided to resort to provisional promotions. All undergraduate students have been promoted to the next year without assessment; they will take their examinations once the situation ameliorates.

The Dental Council of India has issued guidelines to promote all undergraduate students, except those in their final year. The examinations for these students will be held when reasonable, according to the Principal of MAIDS. MAIDS is currently holding the theory examination for final-year postgraduate students.

Online internal assessments have also been concluded for undergraduate students. “The exams for the final-year UG students will be held based on directions from Delhi University,” the Principal of MAIDS said.
