NIRF Ranking 2021 (Law): NLSIU Bengaluru, NLU, Remain Top Law Schools; Check Details Here


NIRF Ranking 2021 has been released by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today, September 9. According to the Education Ministry’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru has been once again announced as the top law school in the country. 

NLSIU Bangalore secured the top rank, with National Law University (NLU) Delhi and National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) Hyderabad, being the second and third best institutions for legal education across the country.

NIRF Ranking 2021 was declared at a virtual event where separate ranking lists for various categories including engineering, medicine, pharmacy, architecture, and law were released for the universities across India. Earlier, in the NIRF 2020 rankings, National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bengaluru, National Law University (NLU) Delhi, and NALSAR University of Law Hyderabad, occupied the first three positions.

Previously in the year 2016 and 2017, the ranking for the law colleges and institutions was not done as the law schools didn't participate. However, in 2018, NIRF Rankings was started for law colleges and NLSIU Bengaluru was ranked number one. Meanwhile, the university continues to retain its topmost position.

As usual, National Law School of India University (NLSIU Bengaluru) retained its top position in the list with a score of 78.06. The second position was occupied by the National Law University (NLU Delhi) with a 74.55 score. The NALSAR University of Law (NALSAR Hyderabad) was positioned at third place with 72.39 score. 

The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS Kolkata) stood at 4th position with a score of 71.24 and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur got placed at 5th position with a 71.09 score. Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) secured 65.18 score and stood at 6th rank. Jamia Millia Islamia University was positioned at 7th rank with a 64.67 score. 

The eighth rank was obtained by the National Law University, Jodhpur with a score of 63.41. Symbiosis Law School was positioned at ninth rank with a 61. 49 score and the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology stood at 10th rank with a score of 57.28. 

Meanwhile in the NIRF Ranking 2021, IIT Madras stood at the top position for Engineering and among universities, IISc Bengaluru stood at first position for research category, and AIIMS Delhi held the top place for medicine. In addition, IIT Madras topped the list overall with 86.76 score, while IISc Bengaluru and IIT Bombay bagged second and third positions with an 82.67 and 82.52 scores. 

About NIRF Rankings 

Approved by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the NIRF Rankings was launched in 2015 and the rankings are usually declared in June every year, however, this year it was delayed considering the pandemic situation. 

The ranking takes into consideration a universal methodology for the colleges and universities. Therefore, Several predefined parameters are taken into account such as Graduation Outcome, Teaching Learning and Resources, Perception, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Research and Professional Practice during the rankings.

The ranking exercise covers 10 categories which include overall universities, engineering colleges, medical colleges, pharmacy, management, architecture, law schools and dental colleges. The NIRF ranking for the Dental colleges was introduced for the first time in 2020.
