NLSIU, IGNFA Dehradun to Offer PG Diploma Program in Environmental Law to IFS Officers

New Delhi: National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), Dehradun with the aim to offer a program in environmental law.

As per NLSIU, the main aim of this collaboration with IGNFA Dehradun is to launch a joint Post Graduate Diploma (PGDM) in Environmental Law course. This course will be open to Indian Forest Service (IFS) officers, trainees and probationers, as part of their professional training.

The PGDM in Environmental Law will be completed within the program cycle of the professional course of the officer trainees. The Memorandum of Understanding shall be effective initially for a period of a total of 5 years.

The program will be launched with the aim to impart professional knowledge in subjects like international and local environmental law and other allied subjects, as part of the professional training acquired by IFS officers, trainees and probationers.

According to a press released by NLSIU, the MoU was signed at the Allen and Overy Hall, Training Centre, NLSIU by Dr Bharat Jyoti IFS, Director, IGNFA, Dehradun and NLSIU Vice-Chancellor Dr Sudhir Krishnaswamy and attended by the other dignitaries.

This initiative is a step towards the Government of India's Mission Karmayogi, which is mainly aimed at improving the capacity of building in India's Civil Services.

Till now, the legal education for forest officers used to be handled largely by internal experts, but by an arrangement with NLSIU Bengaluru, provision is being made to provide the officers with an objective and professional input by the best in the business.

The MoU is a result of vision and efforts at various levels in the MoEFCC to ensure quality training to the officers entering the Civil Service. The collaboration was done in the presence of senior officers of the Indian Forest Service, Bengaluru and the registrar and faculty from NLSIU.
