Panjab University has received approval from the Punjab High Court to scrap the entrance test conducted for admission to law programs at the university.
Justice AG Manish and Justice Ashok Kumar Verma expressed that the decision taken by Panjab University to scrap the law entrance test is justified and reasonable.
The Punjab High Court stated that if the offline entrance examinations are conducted, it would require a large gathering of students and faculty members, which would risk transmission of the COVID-19. Hence, to ensure their safety it would be better to not conduct the exam altogether.
The students and faculty members present would be in a hazardous environment if the exams are conducted and could in turn potentially infect others too.
The decision has been made in the public interest and to avoid risk, being deemed justified by the HC since this decision will only be implemented for the current year.
There were several petitions filed by students and their parents to scrap the entrance exams for law courses in Panjab University by the Department of Law and University Institute of Legal Studies.
Previously there had been plans to conduct the entrance exam in online mode. However, the university does not have sufficient resources or means to ensure a fair examination. The University in itself has the authority to call off the examination.
