Three academic years are the minimum duration, while it may be shortened to two years in exceptional cases and upon the Doctoral Committee's judgement that the individuals' work is done.

A candidate has five years to deliver their thesis at the most. Normally, a thesis submission extension outside the five-year limit won't be approved except if the doctoral committee submits a special suggestion for extension with clear justifications one year prior to the deadline.

PGIMER PhD Admission: Viva-Voce Round

Prior to the final public announcement, the applicants should have at least two publications (Viva-Voce Examination). The institutions offer admissions twice a year to its PhD programmes.

Every year, the courses begin on the first of January and July. After distributing an admission notice across the nation, the institute holds an entrance exam to determine who will be admitted to the PhD programmes it offers on an India Merit basis. The test is an online Computer Based Test (CBT).

The PGIMER was envisioned and planned in 1960 to establish Chandigarh as an "Island Of Excellence," offering an intellectual environment for promising young scientists working in a variety of medical disciplines, advancing the limits of understanding to provide humane care to the sick and suffering, and training medical and paramedical manpower.

The institute was founded in 1962 while still part of the state of Punjab. With effect from April 1, 1967, it was designated an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament (Sr. No. 51 of 1966).

The Institute was founded with the goal:

  1. To create teaching strategies for UG and PG education in order to provide a high level of medical education.
  2. To assemble as many top-notch educational institutions for staff training in all significant disciplines of health activities in one location as feasible.
  3. To achieve postgraduate medical education self-sufficiency in order to meet the demand for experts and medical educators in the nation.
