Request UGC to Let Conduct Final Semester Exams in October: Maharashtra Univs Urge State Govt.

Many of Maharashtra's non-agricultural universities have asked the state government to request the University Grants Commission to allow them to carry out the final semester exams for students and to announce the results by October 31, 2020. There are nearly 13 non-agricultural universities in the state.

Maharashtra State Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant stated that non-agricultural universities in the state of Amravati University and Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University had suggested the completion of the exams and the declaration of results by November 10, 2020.

The universities have also agreed that, given the ongoing situation of COVID-19, it will not be possible for students to leave their homes to take part in the exams. The Minister also added that the examinations are expected to take place for fewer marks in the first week of October 2020. The Minister also added that the mode of the review will soon be declared online.

According to reports, a total of 7,62,962 students are expected to attend the final year exams across state universities.

Exams in October/ November

Samant also said, while speaking to the media, that Amravati University and Yashwantrao Chavan Open University had asked the state to request the UGC to conduct the exams and to announce the results by November 10, 2020, while the remaining universities, including Mumbai, Pune and other universities, had asked the state government to propose the UGC to conduct the exams and to announce the resurrection.

The universities also asked the state government to hold meetings of the State Disaster Management Authority under Chief Minister Uddhav Thackrey to request the UGC on this subject, adding that the SDMA meeting is expected to be held soon.

Three Mode of Exams

With regard to the mode of examination, the Minister stated that the Vice-Chancellors of the University had suggested three ways of conducting the exams, including online, open-book or assignment options.

Last week, the Supreme Court stated that none of the states and universities can support students in the final semester/year without conducting the examinations, adding that observing the performance of the examinations is a reflection of the competence of the students.
