Satara-based GMC receives MUHS Affiliation; check details here

According to a recent notification, the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has granted affiliation consent to a new Government Medical College (GMC)

The GMC in Satara had received consent for affiliation from MUHS on November 28, 2020. The newly affiliated institute has a total of 100 seats for admission to MBBS from the academic session of 2021-2022 onwards.

The approval was finalized after written consent from the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The circular issued by MUHS reads “On the basis of the report by the local inquiry committee (LIC), MUHS has agreed, in principle, to affiliate the proposed medical college to be established as Government Medical College, at Civil Hospital Campus, Satara with the annual intake for 100 seats, pending final authorization from NMC,”

In recent updates from the Directorate of Medical Education & Research (DMER), there has been a proposal for converting 11 hospitals in the district into GMCs. Among these institutes, approval has already been given to an institute in Nandurbar to commence admission for the upcoming academic year.

An official from DMER said “Looking at the growing demand for medical and dental seats, both undergraduate and postgraduate, the state government has been planning to ease the competition by setting up more colleges. We are glad at least one of these colleges will be open for admission in the upcoming academic year itself. We’ve chosen district hospitals that are already in good shape and can ease into teaching with least problems”

The 11 GMCs belong to districts of Amravati, Usmanabad, Palghar, Alibaug, Mumbai, Satara, Parbhani, Buldhana, Nandurbar, Sindhudurg, and Nashik

According to the Union Health Ministry, in a recently released scheme, hospitals in the districts can be transformed into new medical institutes by state governments.

Under the same scheme, 75 GMCs were established all over the country last year.
