TISS: 70% Students Demand On-Campus Classes, Says Report; Details Here

Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Mumbai students are demanding the authorities to reopen their campus. About 51% of the institutes’ students are not comfortable with the online classes.

Recently, the students of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Mumbai have participated in a survey conducted by Progressive Students’ Forum (PSF). The survey was conducted to understand the impact of online classes on students.

The online survey was taken by about 549 students across the 4 campuses of TISS Hyderabad, Tuljapur, Mumbai and Guwahati.

According to the results of the survey, only 28.8% of the students were comfortable with online classes. About 70% of the students want the campus to be reopened.

Progressive Students’ Forum (PSF) was an initiative of TISS students for building a democratic and secular space on campus.

Many educational institutions across the country are demanding to reopen their respective campuses. Hence, PSF took the decision to conduct a survey to know the student’s opinion about the online mode of education and re-opening of campuses.

41% of the students studying at TISS wanted the authorities to reopen the offline classes by the next semester while 32% of the institute’s students want the campuses to reopen by the end of the current semester.

The institute has not been functioning since March due to the effect of the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent lockdown. Eventually, TISS adopted the online method to continue the classes.

Progressive Students’ Forum (PSF) has written a letter to the TISS administration based on the findings of the survey. According to the letter, PSF suggested a phase-wise reopening of campuses that will prove beneficial during the pandemic times.

PSF further suggested the guidelines for attendance and the ways to conduct the offline classes while maintaining social distancing norms.

According to the PSF survey, students demanded the institute to provide hostel facilities to all the returning students.

According to the PSF letter, “In order to reduce congestion, maximum single rooms or not more than two students per room can be ensured. Additionally, mandatory separate rooms shall be provided for high-risk groups.”
