Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has once again entered the top 10 in ICAR 2019 rankings. The University was previously ranked 33. However, showing enormous progress, the varsity jumped 25 positions and secured the 8th rank in the latest rankings.
During the previous year, TNAU was criticized for not producing quality research. This was also shown by the drop to the 33rd position in the ICAR rankings. However, the University took a series of measures to improve its ranking.

Quantitative increase of paper publications, an invitation to more external agency funded schemes, and increasing recognition in the international scene were some of the steps taken to increase the rank.
In the latest ICAR rankings, the University is placed 8th among 67 agricultural institutes in the country. TNAU is 1st in Southern Agricultural Universities and 4th in state agricultural universities. However, till 2016, it was always ranked in the top seven agricultural institutes.
Its rank started degrading in 2017 when it dropped to 27th which was followed by 33rd rank in 2018. The top ranks were taken by the ICAR Indian Agricultural University, ICAR National Dairy Research, and the Punjab Agricultural University.

Vice-Chancellor of TNAU, N Kumar admitted that a drop in rankings affected the perception of the university among the general populace. It also affected the grants that were being released to the University.
The Vice-Chancellor further said that the faculty-guided the students to take more junior and senior research fellowships. This was one of the key factors in the rise in rankings. He also said that the credit also goes to the scientist who mobilized funds through external agencies to publish their research.
For the future, the VC hoped for an even better ranking in the ICAR. This would allow the University to rope in more international students which would also increase the diversity among the student population.
He reiterated that the University would continue to strive on the path of research and attract more avenues for collaborative research to empower farmers.
