UGC Permits 4 More Universities to Offer Online Degree Programs; Read Details Here


As per the recent updates, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted permission to four more affiliated universities to offer online degree programs to students. 

In addition to 38 universities which were approved in June 2021 by the University Grants Commission, which included 13 State Universities, 15 Deemed-to-be Universities, 3 Central Universities, and 3 private universities. For now, the commission has added four universities to the list, which are Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences and Bharathiar University from Tamil Nadu state.

Additionally, the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute, West Bengal, and Mahatma Gandhi University from Kerala have also received permission to offer online programs. In accordance with the decision made by the Union Grants Commission, the Kuvempu University and the University of Mysore will now offer a total of 12 online degree programs to interested and eligible students. 

The number of online courses offered by both universities; Kuvempu University and the University of Mysore is said to be the highest number on the list. Earlier, during a meeting held by UGC on July 01, 2021, the commission decided to change the academic session which starts from July 2021 to November 2021 due to the surge of Covid-19 pandemic in the country. 

Additionally, as per the decision made by the commission in the meeting, the last date for admission to the next academic session 2021-2022 was set to December 15, 2021, under exceptional circumstances. 

As per the Union Grants Commission’s official statement, the universities can offer these programs as long as they comply with the NAAC or NIRF ranking requirements as per UGC regulations, and if not, they can discontinue the programs and inform the UGC accordingly.

“Each HEI was required to submit an affidavit for ensuring compliance to all the provisions of the University Grants Commission (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020,” the UGC statement said.
