West Bengal Government Urges UGC on Jadavpur University IoE Tag: Read Full Report Here

October 11, 2021: The West Bengal Government has urged the University Grants Commission (UGC) to reconsider its decision to remove Jadavpur University from the "Institution of Eminence (IoE)".

Earlier, in 2018, the Union Grants commission added Jadavpur University under the IoE status. However, later in July, the commission decided to reconsider the recommendations made by the empowered expert committee (EEC) to remove it from the list.

As per the reports, the Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) has further reached out to the Ministry of Education regarding the necessary action needed for the IoE list. The Higher Education Regulator has denied offering IoE status to Jadavpur University.

The decision to deny Jadavpur University for the Institution of Eminence was due to the fact that the state government of West Bengal decided against sharing the burden of funding JU's IoE status.

In accordance with the revised scheme submitted by the university, the West Bengal Higher Education Department Secretary, Manish Jain has requested the Union Grants Commission to keep JU in the IoE status.

The revised scheme of Jadavpur University includes a total of INR 606 crore to UGC. The IoE tag has made the university eligible for a grant of INR 1,000 crore from the Centre over five years, the official statement said.

Adding to the same, JU Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das said, “It will be an injustice and unfair to deny that status to the university”. He further added that not adding Jadavpur University in the tag is unfortunate, despite the release of the revised budget from the university.”

Earlier, in October 2019, WB Governor announced that Jadavpur University has received the status of 'Institute of Eminence'. The announcement was made through an official press conference.

While talking about the status, Jadavpur University Chancellor Dhankar said, "Jadavpur University has achieved global reputation and deserves the status of Institute of eminence. We will work together to get this status".

Under the IoE scheme, 20 higher educational institutions (HEIs) are offered with up to Rs 1,000 crore to help them become world-class research institutions. As of now, 12 HEIs have received the Institution of Eminence (IoE) tag from UGC.
