Deakin university review

8.2 /10

Deakin University is the only university in Australia to offer the specific course I am interested in: forensic science combined with criminology. Due to their higher number of campuses, they are able to provide specific courses, making them a very individualized opportunity.

Course Curriculum :

I think the course curriculum is pretty standard with units covering biology, chemistry, and criminology as well as data and statistics. Doing a combined course I personally find it includes a good range of topics in order to keep further employment opportunities open.

Exams :

I completed my Victorian certificate of education (VCE), I have not completed any university level exams yet.

Placement :

I have heard they have a wide variety of placements and an extensive program to introduce students to knowledge and skills regarding applying for and preparing for employment opportunities. I plan to engage in this program and look into placement opportunities.

Internship :

My university does provide internship however as the first year I have not looked into finding a placement and taking advantage of this opportunity, however, I fully plan to. I would find it very advantageous to apply my course to real-world experience.

Events :

Deakin University is very conscious of expressing multiculturalism and acceptance of all individuals. I am aware of the celebration of many cultures festivals and traditions as well as fundraisers for meaningful causes. Popular is the celebration of the LGBTQ community as well as many cultures.

Fees :

Australian universities, (Deakin included) offer a HECS assistance which delays fees until after students enter the workforce and earn over a certain level of income. Few expenses are actually expected up fronts, such as textbooks, and unit specific equipment such as lab coats/glasses.

Scholarship :

I was awarded a small upfront scholarship whilst living in my small country town before loving to pursue tertiary education. This covered my fees for textbooks and relocation and reduced the strain of additional stress.

Examination Structure :

The exam structure is fairly standard with an end of semester exam for 4 years. Each exam breaks down topics introduced to students in their units. Depending on the unit, the exam may include short answer, extended response or essay format.

Faculty :

The faculty is well informed and knowledgeable as well as respectable and engaging. They introduce topics at a good pace and back the information up with examples.

Hostel :

I personally reside off campus which saves some substantial fees whilst I am lucky enough to live in quite close proximity to the campus. Whilst it is difficult to engage in as much social interaction, it is a suitable arrangement for myself at this time.
