UNSW - my first (year) impressions

Km
8.7 /10

It was the only one that had my particular course, it is also close to where I live and easy to get to by public transport, one of the main reasons I chose it is because of the high level of support it has for indigenous students which were a big determining factor. It is also a top tier university with an outstanding reputation.

Course Curriculum :

So far it is really interesting and engaging. The topics being taught are quite relevant to the area I want to be working in in the future. The assessments are very specific which is good because you can explain in more depth. The lectures are very interesting because each topic in the curriculum all relate to each other and you find similarities between most topics which is interesting to see.

Exams :

I sat the HSC (higher school certificate) and received an atar (which is what you use to get into uni) of 77.5, however, I gained entry through a different pathway.

Internship :

Yes they do, however I have not experienced an internship. From what I?ve heard they give really good workplace experience at a high level, in many different work areas. In my degree area there are many different internships in government agencies, private research centres, political offices, parliament, and libraries.

Fees :

The fee structure is simple and easily managed, fees can either be payed straight up or deferred through the governments fee help which defers payment until you earn a certain threshold and payments will be taken out of your tax. The university has also an amenities payment which is $100 to use amenities such as the library and online services, this payment can also be deferred.

Scholarship :

Yes, I received an equity scholarship which I applied for through UAC and received directly from the university. I receive payments every month to ease financial burden

Examination Structure :

There are assessments that must be done throughout the term and the exams are held end of term however not all subjects have exams, some only have assessments. The exams are held in a block with a few days of study before the exam block starts. The assements and online quizzes are done and submitted online.

Faculty :

The faculty of arts and social sciences is very helpful and supportive of its students. They make sure that you are doing relevant subjects to your degree. So far I have not had any problems at all and all interactions with faculty staff have been very good.

Hostel :

I live with a relative who lives fairly close to the university, I pay for food and board, I also manage a part time job which allows me to help with expenses of living. Living off campus can be difficult at times however I manage, especially coming from a boarding school, it is very different.
