ICSE Class 10 Exam Pattern 2023: Group-wise Subjects & Marking Scheme

ICSE Class 10th Exam Pattern 2023 has been released by the board. CISCE Board exam pattern for class 10 is expected to remain same as that of previous year. However, any major update will be notified as soon as it is released on the official website.

  • Class 10 exam pattern consists of grouping of subjects (compulsory/optional), question paper design and section-wise marks weightage. 
  • CISCE Board has released revised syllabus for class 10 on its official website cisce.org.

ICSE Class 10 Exam Pattern 2023: Group-wise Subjects

ICSE Board provides choices to students to opt subjects apart from compulsory subjects. In class 10 board exams, students have to appear for 7 subjects in total. These 7 subjects belong to three different groups as follows:

  • Group I – It includes 4 compulsory subjects.
  • Group II – It includes 2 optional subjects.
  • Group III – It contains 1 optional subject. 

Group I Subjects

The marks weightage of group I subject is – 80% (external exams) + 20% (internal exams).

The marks weightage of group II subject is – 80% (external exams) + 20% (internal exams).

Group I includes 4 compulsory subjects each of 100 marks. Theory exams will be of 80 marks and the duration of exam will be 2 hours.

Group II includes total 7 subjects. Students can choose any two subjects of their choice. Theory exam of each subject will be of 80 marks. Exam duration may vary for different subjects.

Guidelines for Subject Choice

ICSE Class 10 Grading System 2023

The grading system of ICSE class 10 exam 2023 is a nine-numbered grading scale, where 9 is the lowest and 1 is the highest. Students have to secure 7 which is the minimum passing grade to get the passing certificate. Only Grades 1 to 7 are recorded on certificates. The interpretation of the grades is as follows:

  1. Internal Assessment

The internal assessment is calculated based on the performance of SUPW and COMMUNITY SERVICE. SUPW stands for Socially Useful Productive Work, of which Grade A is the highest and Grade E is the lowest. Only Grades A to D is recorded in Certificates. The interpretation of the grades is as follows.

Guidelines for Subject Choice in ICSE Board

It should be noted that same or related subjects of different groups can not be opted simultaneously by a student. While choosing optional subjects students are not allowed to be opt the following combination of subjects:

  • Group II Environmental Science and Group III Environmental Applications.
  • Group II Economics and Group III Economic Applications.
  • Group II Commercial Studies and Group III Commercial Applications.
  • Sanskrit as a second language subject in Group I and Sanskrit as a classical language in Group II.
  • Different Modern Foreign Languages shall be opted from each group (II and III).

Apart from subject choice, students need to keep in mind the following points:

  • Optional subjects can be chosen only at the time of class 9 registration. Subjects cannot be changed in class 10.
  • Students are allowed to choose one additional subject other than the optional subjects in group II. 
  • Students can also opt for an additional secondary language if Hindi is chosen as one of the second language subject.

ICSE Class 10 Preparation Tips 2023

Below are some preparation tips for students appearing for ICSE Board class 10 exams:

  • Languages: Focus mainly on the grammar and writing part of the syllabus. Try to solve sample question papers.
  • Social Sciences: The students are suggested to memorize important details about the dates and events. Make your own notes for quick revision at the last moment. 
  • Mathematics and Sciences: In these subjects, student need to gain a clear understanding of the concepts. Also, they need to focus on the numerical equations and processes as well. Refer to different reference books to practice a variety of questions.

Students are advised to follow the guidelines given below on the day of final board examination:

  • Students should reach the exam center 30 minutes prior to the exam.
  • Students need to bring all the necessary documents and personal stationaries with them.
  • Students are advised to use black ink while filling up the details on the exam booklet.
