Dr. Vrushank Shah is the Head - Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering at Indus University. How does the curriculum of your department ensure the best practice of industry?

“We have prepared models pertaining to prepare students for the industry”

In today’s educational system, the participation of industries in curriculum design and delivery at institutions and universities is crucial. It helps to prepare students for future employment. We have various models to support the above context. In the first model, the industry will design the course as per its requirement and deliver the same in the partnering institutes through their trainers. The students need to write the final examination, and those qualified will be absorbed in those industries. In yet another model, the industry will select the candidates for employment and then provide tailor-made courses to those candidates through the faculty, who have undergone special training through Train the Trainer workshops conducted by those industries. As a general practice, most of the institutes involve industry people during their Board of Studies meetings and design the curriculum with their inputs. We have considered our institute to explain these models' processes in detail with relevant case studies. Also, this paper analyses the effectiveness of these models. 

What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the University and the students are?

“Our faculty ensure to provide best quality education”

The faculty at Indus University is committed to the tripartite mission of teaching, research, and service. Indus University expects faculty members to develop each of these three areas in the regular course of their professional lives. Each faculty member is responsible for the quality and content of instruction in the classroom. At all times, the faculty should strive to promote the general purposes of the University and achieve the College's objectives. The following objectives and considerations should guide the faculty

  • Provide the highest quality classroom instruction toward attaining the goals of the University, the College, the Department, and the courses.
  • Seek new and better devices, techniques, online technologies, procedures, and methods that may improve the teaching and learning process.
  • Recognize individual needs of students and provide challenging learning opportunities for all learners.
  • Recognize and provide academic and career guidance and encouragement through formal and informal conferences with students in order to supplement and improve the regular classroom instruction.
  • Develop efficient and equitable procedures for the evaluation of student academic performance and assign grades that reflect the achievement and progress of students enrolled in the courses. Provide timely and appropriate feedback to students.

What do you see as the Department’s greatest strengths?

“Our students and faculty are the greatest strengths of the department”

  • The Department of EC has well qualified and dedicated faculty.
  • Ample of extracurricular activities and curricular activities to develop students in every aspect.
  • All the laboratories are as per the curriculum and are established on par with state of art technology.
  • Testing facilities are available to carry out the routine tests for various equipment.
  • Excellent central library including separate department library and computing, Internet facilities are available in excess of the norms stipulated. Mechanism is available for direct mentoring of students by faculty, interacting with students, and directing them to upgrade their skills.

What are some of the biggest challenges you see, both for higher education in general and for Indus University specifically?

“There are many challenges that we have to overcome by working together”

Presently, education standards of higher education, research, and innovative skills for novel ideas are not on par with the international community in most of India's universities. There is an increasing gap between education and employability. Many industrial people complained about the quality of students coming from colleges. Mostly, students lack job skills. As per recent studies, around 50% of faculties are working in colleges based on a contract. In the long term, teaching with contract faculty has severe implications for quality and research. Many private colleges started to receive funds from UGC and fee refunds from state governments. Specifically, in south India, every year, there were many seats vacant in engineering. Permissions for new colleges and existing colleges require more scrutiny than at present.

How do you tend to establish a healthy relation and environment in your university?

“We make sure to provide an ambient framework where students can easily experiment and explore”

Successful teachers have the ability to maximize the learning potential of all students in their class. Developing positive relationships between a teacher and student is a fundamental aspect of quality teaching and student learning. Positive teacher-student relationships promote a sense of school belonging and encourage students to participate cooperatively. Students develop the confidence to experiment and succeed in an environment where the fear of failure does not restrict them. Teachers can assist students with motivation and goal setting, and students can turn to them for advice and guidance.
