Determination of learning crafts success in education for the youth of the Nation

Mr. Fenil Shah is the Associate Professor and Head of Indus design School, Gujarat. He holds an experience of more than twenty-five years in the field of education. He is a Certified Usability Analyst from Human Factors International. He is a guide for all his students of the institute.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“To Empower the youth for paving a path towards success”

This is my first teaching assignment. However, my 25+ years of varied experience in the product design and user experience industry will help me in bringing industry-relevant education to the university. The idea is to have more professionals from the industry to interact with and teach the students. To empower the students to face the design challenges in a way that we leave the world in a better state in the future.

 What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

“Democratic leadership is my way of working for better decision making of the institute”

My leadership style is Participative or democratic the essence of which is to involve and strengthen team members in the decision-making process. The team members feel included, engaged, and motivated to contribute. It encourages creativity, the creation of a strong team, a high level of productivity, and job satisfaction. Of course, the leader will normally have the last word in the decision making processes.

What would you like people to know about your Department they may not know?

“Distinguished departments to excel in every field of circular and academia” 

 Indus Design School is a new design institute with young and enthusiastic faculty from the most reputed design institutes in the country. We currently offer Communication Design, Fashion Design, Interior Design, and Product Design disciplines. We have distinguished members from the design community on our panel like Mr. Srini Srinivasan (President of World Design Organization), Mr. Pradyumna Vyas (ex-executive director of NID), and many more. Everybody associates the design field with glamour undermining the hard work that is required to create each design whether it is a logo, a garment, a piece of furniture, or a product.

What do you see as the Department’s greatest strengths?

“The enhancement and evolution in the institute for providing quality education to the students”

• Qualification, expertise, and experience of the faculty is the greatest strength at Indus University. 
• The curriculum that we have developed is more industry-relevant as it is developed by professionals who have a lot of industry experience
• Indus being young has the freedom and flexibility to adapt and modify its program based on the changing needs.
• The design methodology we teach is an amalgamation of different disciplines and helps the students to choose the right tools to apply design thinking.

What are some of the biggest challenges you see, both for higher education in general and for Indus University specifically?

“To accept every hurdle and move forward with the required pace for accomplishment”

The biggest challenge to Indus University is to deliver quality education in a rapidly changing technology, climate, and socio-political environment. How can we keep the curriculum relevant to today and targeted towards a better tomorrow is the challenge? Doing the above while keeping the rising educational costs in check.

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

“There is no loophole to success without hard work and commitment”

With the growing number of design colleges and several students, the competition is steep. There is no escaping dedicated hard work for the students. Also, the disciplines are narrowing which means the student needs to expand the knowledge base wider and have diverse learning. The student needs to learn to quickly adapt to changing technology and environment. The design student needs to develop good communication skills, keen observation sense, and be sensitive to the environment.
