How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects?

“Implementing teaching methodologies that promote experiential learning”

Our college is currently offering Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc.) programs in Retail Management and Tourism and Hotel Management sponsored by UGC. The semesters have a judicious mix of skills relating to professional education and general education on a credit-based system. Under this framework, learning outside of the classroom is an active process. Here, the students encounter authentic problems, test for real solutions, and interact with others to make sense of the world around them. As a Nodal Officer, I have seen students developing observation and perception skills, and enhancing interest in the subject.

What are the best practices offered by the department to the students?

“Wide range of practical teaching activities to address student needs”

  • Use of ICT based equipment in day-to-day teaching-learning processes.
  • Automation of College library which is conducive for regular teaching and research.
  • The department provides extra material or exercises for students who lack essential background knowledge or skills.
  • Use different activities in-class such as discussions, lecture, guest speakers and pair work.
  • Provision of On-Job-Training and industrial training.

How do you strategize the curriculum at your college?

Formation of an advisory committee that functions as per industry & academic requirement”

As an educational institution, we have formed a UGC Advisory Committee that is responsible for developing and updating the curriculum. The Committee monitors scheme which includes student intake, students admission, on rolls, dropouts and student’s placement.

It also looks at Industry engagement: MoUs, internship and curriculum alignment with industry requirements, National occupational standards and NSQF.

What are your views regarding the placements of the students of your department?

We have developed a strong framework for a rewarding and professional career”

The Department organizes career guidance programmes for all the students starting from the first year. The cell arranges training programmes like mock interviews, group discussions, communication skills workshop, etc. It also organizes public sector exam training for

students who are interested to join government sectors. It conducts pre-placement training sessions to equip students with relevant skills in their respective fields.

What are the challenges you are facing to uplift the quality of education of your department?

“Students learning outcomes and number of placements are prevalent issues”

  • The department perceives student absenteeism and misconduct as a major concern.
  • Curriculum Design is a critical task that is comprehensive and more encompassing keeping the constantly changing industry equipment in mind.
  • The department needs to provide substantial time for communication and collaboration with the industry.
  • The placement of students is becoming very challenging gradually for us.
  • The department needs to have proper funding from the various funding agencies.

How does the curriculum in your department ensure the best practice of the industry?

Specific NSQF standards form the benchmarks for education and training programs”

The vocation department has adopted The National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF).

It is a competency-based framework that organizes qualifications according to a series

of knowledge, skills and aptitude. National Occupational Standards (NOS) are statements of the skills, knowledge and understanding needed for effective performance in a job role and are expressed as outcomes of competent performance. These statements are being formulated by the respective Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) set up by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) with industry leaders.

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

“Being actively involved in student activities and faculty projects, research works”

I think about college as a total experience in which I purposely become as deeply involved as possible. Forming study groups, meeting with college professors, and making use of campus programs and services is a crucial step. I also seek opportunities to work with professors on research projects, laboratory experiments, and writing for publications.

What valuable advice would you like to the students for a prosperous career ahead?

See challenges as opportunities and never stop learning”

Keep yourself motivated and work towards your dreams. Opportunities eventually start to pop up when you have a goal set, and you work on it. Giving up shall never be an option because that is not something greatness inspires. Failures make you stronger and more experienced.
