Increase in NEET PG Seats: Key Points

  • NEET PG 2021 seat increment is aimed at increasing tertiary health care in the country.
  • A total of 44000 PG seats(36,192 MD/MS seats and 8000 DNB/FNB seats) will be allocated for 54000 undergraduates passing out in the preceding session. MS stands for Master in General Surgery and MS stands for Masters in General Surgery.
  • Previously in 2014, there were 23000 seats in Postgraduate medical courses including all the Government and Private Medical institutes across the country. A top official of MCI and a member of NITI Ayog cited that the present process of increasing the seats will lead to more than double the number of seats added since the year 2014.
  • The officials also stated that NITI Ayog is working closely with the Ministry of Health in promoting bigger hospitals to offer resident doctor diplomat or Fellow of National Board (DNB/FNB)courses under the National Board of Examination

To encounter the shortage of qualified doctors and manage a gap in medical education, the Niti Aayog decided to workout with the public-private partnership (PPP) model that will link private medical colleges with operational district hospitals to increase medical seats. With this new scheme, every PG student will have to serve in the district hospital for a term of three months to be able to be eligible for the Degree. The sole objective of the scheme is to justify the cost of medical education.
