Galvanize the Future: A Richard L. Brooks Memorial Scholarship Essay Contest

American Galvanizers Association (AGA) offers Galvanize the Future: A Richard L. Brooks Memorial Scholarship Essay Contest to students enrolled in the universities North America. Both domestic and international students pursuing UG and PG studies are eligible to apply for this essay scholarship contest.

  • Two recipients are selected 'Galvanize the Future: a Richard L. Brooks Memorial Scholarship Essay Contest' and receive $2500.
  • Students must be pursuing studies in majors related to architecture, civil engineering, structural engineering, construction management, or materials science.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply for Galvanize the Future: A Richard L scholarship, applicants must fulfill eligibility requirements listed below:

  • Applicants pursuing UG and PG studies in recognized universities of North America.
  • Both domestic and international students pursuing full-time and part-time study.
  • Must be pursuing majors related to architecture, civil engineering, structural engineering, construction management, or material science.
  • High school students are not eligible to apply.

Application Process

The AGA invites applications to Galvanize the Future: A Richard L. Brooks Memorial Scholarship online only via the official website. To submit the scholarship application form, one must:

  • Complete personal information form and other information related to the educational institution.
  • Must submit an essay atleast 1000 words but not more than 2000 words on the topic mentioned below:
    • Think about a specific market (e.g. utility, bridge/highway, buildings, etc.) where you notice corrosion taking place. Which of these markets do you feel would benefit the most from utilizing more hot-dip galvanized steel? Justify your position.
    • The Department of Transportation has tasked you to think of ways to decrease the number of tax dollars spent on infrastructure, particularly on repairs. Submit a detailed analysis of cost and performance as to why you would suggest hot-dip galvanized structural steel and/or galvanized rebar as the preferred solution.

Applicants can access the various free resources available on the AGA website about hot-dip galvanizing, current publications, the AGA KnowledgeBase, technical information resource CDs and industry links to get relevant information for their essays.

  • Submit the essay for the scholarship contest. Supported file types are: Word, Rich Text Format and Adobe Acrobat PDF format (.doc, .docx, .rtf, .pdf, and .wpd)
  • Once the application has been received, an email confirmation regarding the same will be sent to applicant’s registered email.

Selection Process

The Galvanize the Future: A Richard L. Brooks Memorial Scholarship is an essay based scholarship awarded to two students.

For the selection process, reviewers at the AGA read and rank all the essays submitted for the contest. The judges consider the following factors while evaluating an essay:

  • Relevance
  • Accuracy
  • Conciseness
  • Ingenuity

The two best essays from the application pool will be selected. The AGA Executive Director determines the final awardees of the scholarship.

Recipients will be personally notified and announced on the AGA website in May 2023. The scholarship amount of $2500 will be paid directly to the recipient’s educational institution.


Grant Details

The 'Galvanize the Future: A Richard L. Brooks Memorial Scholarship Essay Contest' offers two scholarships of $2500 every year. Applicants have to submit essay for the scholarship.

The award value is directly paid to the educational institutions of the winning students and not to the student himself/ herself. The scholarship grant awarded is non – renewable.

Terms and conditions regarding Scholarship

  • All submissions become the property of the AGA and will not be returned.
  • Winning essays become the property of the AGA which will cooperate fully with the authors in the republication of essays.
