Life at NUS

It is one of the top-rated colleges in the world, especially for the computer science department in which it ranks 6th. Since I was interested in CS, I was keen on joining NUS. The admission process wasn't too difficult as they did not require any extra professional exams. The admission was purely based on 12th board results.

Course Curriculum :

You require 160 MCs (Modular Credits) to graduate. 12 MCs are for internships and industrial attachment. Hence, we are encouraged to take up internships and get some hands-on knowledge in the industry. Apart from core modules, there are some university-level requirements and are known as General Education modules which are compulsory for all students. Computer Science has about 700 students. While we only have 1-2 professors for each module, we have the concept of tutorials where we are divided into smaller groups of 10-20 students and are assigned to a senior in the same course who conducts classes for a deeper understanding of the material.

Placement :

I am still studying but according to NUS statistics, the average salary of a CS graduate is at least $5000 and the prospects are great.

Fees :

Being a resident of Singapore, it is quite affordable. The University provides an option to sign a bond with the Government where we are required to work in Singapore for 3 years and in return, we get subsidized fees for all years in university. I opted for this option and hence my fees were quite subsidized.

Campus Life :

There are various NUS wide clubs. There is an Indian Society which organises major Indian events like Holi, Diwali, Uttarayan, etc. There are multiple libraries that you have access to in various parts of the campus. There are in campus buses for you to travel from one faculty to another. Some clubs I found interesting are Uni-Y which is a volunteering organisation, a coffee interest group in pioneer house, board games interest group, etc

Hostel :

There are different types of accommodations - Halls, Residences, and colleges. The application for colleges begins very soon and is super competitive. For halls, you must participate in activities to gain points in order to maintain your stay. Points can be gained by participating in CCAs, clubs, societies, sports, etc. On the other hand, Residences are relatively quieter. There are no criteria but depends just on vacancy. I stayed at Pioneer House which is a new concept recently established. It is close to the MRT station which makes it easier to commute anywhere else in Singapore. There is a canteen in the vicinity and thus, no meal plan is provided.
