  • In this one-year graduate certificate program, students will learn from a team of award-winning filmmakers and industry professionals and be immersed in rigorous, intensive, hands-on training in the art and craft of documentary filmmaking.
  • Built on three pillars relative, technical, industry students will learn every aspect of documentary production, from story idea to pitching, shooting and editing, and market and distribution.
  • As a graduate of this program, students will be engaged in pre-production (research and development,) production (principal photography,) and post-production (editing) as they wear multiple hats as a director, producer, cinematographer, and editor to make their first documentary film.

Admission Requirements

  • Ontario university or college degree or college diploma or equivalent
  • Meeting with the program co-ordinator
  • *Although not required for admission, experience in one or more of the following is recommended for your success in the program: visual arts, visual media, film, video, photography, storytelling, journalism, or interactivity.

English Language Requirements

All applicants to Seneca must be well prepared to study in English. If you are coming from a country where English is not the primary language, you must show one of the following:

  1. Successful completion of a minimum of two years of full-time study in a school and country where English is the primary language
  2. Successful completion of a minimum of one year of full-time study at the postsecondary level in an institution and country where English is the primary language
  3. Successful completion of an intensive English program such as the English Language Institute
  4. English proficiency test scores from one of the international English language testing bodies are listed below. Only tests taken in the last two years are considered valid
  • IELTS Academic - Minimum 6.0 with no skill below 5.5
  • PTE Academic - Minimum score 58
  • TOEFL iBT (including MyBest TOEFL and Home Edition) - Minimum 80 with no skill below 20
  • Duolingo - Minimum score 105 to 110
  • Cambridge English Exams (B2 First/FCE, C1 Advanced/CAE, or C2 Proficiency/CPE) - Minimum 169 with no skill below 162

  1. Second class /division degree results in a minimum overall average of 55%
  2. No more than 4 backlogs
