The Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute (VPCI) is a postgraduate medical institution devoted to research, teaching, and patient care in the field of chest diseases. The institute was established in1946 and then formally opened on12th January 1953 and is maintained by Delhi University and funded entirely by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. 

VPCI offers 3 types of courses – DM, MD, and Ph.D. and there 5 types of specializations available in MD and Ph.D. 

The candidates have to take National Eligibility Entrance Test Post-Graduate (NEET PG) for admission into MD course followed by online counselling. For admission into DM course of Pulmonary Medicine, the candidates have to take a National Eligibility Entrance Test Super Speciality (NEET SS) followed by online counselling.

Admission to the Ph.D. program will be granted on the basis of an entrance test followed by personal interviews by the admissions committee

Final Selection to all the courses is governed by the Faculty of Medicine Studies, Delhi University and all the application forms and information is available on its official website.

VPCI Delhi MD Admission 2023

VPCI offers 5 specializations under the MD course i.e. Pulmonary Medicine, Physiology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology. The admissions are made through the Faculty of Medical Sciences, the University of Delhi as per the university procedures and regulations.

VPCI Delhi MD Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must have passed the final M.B.B.S. examination from the University of Delhi and must have completed a satisfactorily one-year compulsory rotating internship and must submit their internship completion certificate before or at the time of appearing for the counselling.

The candidate must have full registration with the Delhi Medical Council/ State Medical Council/ Medical Council of India/ Dental Council of India.

VPCI Delhi MD Selection Criteria

There is 50% Delhi University Quota and 50% All India Quota will be undertaken by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India

  • In order to become eligible for admission, a candidate must obtain 50% marks in NEET PG
  • The cut-off for SC/ST/OBC 40% in NEET PG
  • The next process is the counseling for the seats available

VPCI offers a Doctorate of Medicine in Pulmonary Medicine.

VPCI Delhi DM Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must have passed the final MBBS examination and must have completed a satisfactorily one-year compulsory rotating internship.

The candidate must have passed the Post-Graduate (MD/ MS) examination.

The candidate holding Diplomate of National Board of Examination will be eligible for admission to Super-Speciality courses, provided they have done thesis work. Evidence of the thesis shall be produced by the candidate.

VPCI Delhi DM Selection Criteria

Admission would be made strictly on the basis of merit of the eligible candidates determined by marks obtained in the NEET SS and the next step is the online counselling. The candidates are required to register themselves online on www.mcc.nic.in.

VPCI Delhi Ph.D. Admission 2023

VPCI offers Ph.D. in 5 specializations i.e. Pulmonary Medicine, Physiology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology.

VPCI Delhi Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria

The candidates should have a Master's degree or a professional in the same or allied subjects, declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate. A relaxation of 5% for the reserved castes is given.

VPCI Delhi Ph.D. Selection Criteria

Ph.D. Candidates will be admitted in a two-stage process through the following:

  • Entrance Test to be held once a year
  • An interview (or more if required for Ph.D.) in a year

Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET (including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/DBT-JRF/ICMR-JRF/DST-INSPIRE/AYUSH-NET or equivalent national level examination/fellowship (as identified by DRC)/GATE/teacher fellowship holder can directly appear for interview

The syllabus for the entrance test will consist of 50% questions on research aptitude/methodology and 50% subject-specific questions.

  • After the successful selection of the candidates after the entrance test results, candidates are required to fill the online counselling form

Ques. How to reach the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute?

Ans. The Institute is located on the campus of the University of Delhi in North Delhi, opposite Sri Ram College of Commerce, and next to Miranda House. Being in the capital of India, it is well connected to all parts of the country. 
By Train: From Delhi Main (Old Delhi) and New Delhi Railway Station, one can reach the Institute by taking the underground metro to Delhi University or by City bus service. 
By Bus: Delhi is well connected by interstate bus services to other cities and towns in the region. The buses terminate at the Interstate Bus Terminal (ISBT) at Kashmiri Gate, about 4 Km from the Institute, and at Anand Vihar terminal in east Delhi (about 15 Km away). Local transport and metro rail services are available for reaching the Institute from these terminals.

Ques. Is there any library facility?

Ans. The VPCI Library is providing patient care information support and catering to the academic needs of the faculty members, resident doctors, researchers, and students alike for research purposes. It forms a part of Institute support services and acquires thought process, collects and disseminates global information in the field of Biomedical Sciences with specialization in pulmonary diseases and allied sciences. The library started in 1955, but it has back volumes of several journals more than 100 years old. Most of the journals have complete sets of volumes originating right from their treatises of medicine which are readily available for basic and historical insights. It also has a very good comprehensive collection of serial publications like Annual Reviews, Years books, Recent advances.

Ques. Are there any Hostel accommodations?

Ans. The Foundation Stone of Patel Niwas, a postgraduate Hostel, was laid down by Dr. C.D. Deshmukh, Vice-Chancellor, the University of Delhi on April 7, 1962. It is situated near the main building of the V.P. Chest Institute. The hostel is a 3-storeyed building consisting of 30 rooms, 10 rooms on each floor for boys and girls studying D.M., M.D., and Ph.D. courses in the Institute. The rooms are free furnished and facilities of a common room (for visitors, reading and watching TV. etc.). There is a well-equipped Mess with a dining room and kitchen having all modern facilities. The rooms are allotted to the students of VPCI on first cum first serve basis.

Ans. In addition to the University courses, the Institute provides the following short-term training programs:
  • Basic Cardiopulmonary Training Course
  • Short Term Training Programme (STTP) for Technicians on Pulmonary Function Test
  • Workshop on Diagnosis and management of Respiratory Allergic Diseases
