The Indian Institute of Soil Science is a premier organization dedicated entirely to soil research in the country. It was established in the year 1988 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

IISS offers fellowship programs in the areas of basic and strategic soil research. Candidates can apply for Field Assistant, Junior Research Fellow, Senior Research Fellow and Research Associate positions.

  • Candidates applying for Ph. D programs at IISS must appear for any one of the following NET examinations:-

CISR-UGC/ MHRD Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering/ DBT/ DAE-JEST & JGEEBILS, NBHM/ ICMR-JRF/ ICAR Test/ DoP-GPAT

  • Candidates who clear any one of these entrance exams can walk-in for interviews conducted by IISS in Bhopal.
  • Candidates applying for the Field Assistant position must be graduates in agriculture/ horticulture/ botany or any other related discipline. They should ideally have experience working with farmers.
  • JRF candidates must be postgraduates in Microbiology/ Agricultural Microbiology/ Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry/ Soil Physics/ Agricultural Physics with 4 or 5 years of Bachelor’s degree and 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PH candidates).
  • Those who have completed 3 years Bachelor’s degree course along with 2 years Master’s degree course are also eligible to apply for JRF provided they have qualified NET/GATE.
  • Candidates applying for SRF positions must be postgraduates (M. Sc) in Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry/ Soil Physics/ Agricultural Physics/Soil Science/Geology/ Agronomy/Basic Sciences with 4 or 5 years of Bachelor’s degree to be eligible for admission.
  • Research Associate applicants must hold Ph. D or postgraduate degrees in Soil Science/Agronomy/ Agricultural Physics/ Environmental Science/Agril. Meteorology along with 4 or 5 years of Bachelor’s degree with 1st division or 60% marks and at least 2 years of research experience.
  • Candidates must carry original and self- attested photocopies of mark sheets, date of birth proof, qualification, experience and caste certificates along with self-attested photographs and 4 sets of complete bio-data.

Indian Institute of Soil Science Admissions 2023 Ph. D Admission

Candidates for the Senior Research Fellow and Research Associate posts have to mandatorily appear for any one of the following National Eligibility Tests (NET) to be eligible for admission:-  CISR-CISR-UGC/ MHRD Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering/ DBT- Biotechnology Eligibility Test/ DAE-JEST & JGEEBILS, NBHM/ ICMR-JRF/ ICAR Test/ DoP-GPAT. JRF and SRF applicants must complete 4/5 years Bachelor’s degree course and postgraduate degree course in related disciplines, while Field Assistants need to be graduates in agriculture/ horticulture/ botany. RAs must be Ph. Ds or postgraduates with minimum 60% marks in graduation and at least 2 years of research experience.

Candidates who have qualified any of the above-mentioned NET examinations can walk-in for interviews at the Indian Institute of Soil Science campus in Bhopal at dates published in national newspapers and published on the IISS website. The institute may also conduct an additional test to further evaluate the interviewees. Candidates must bring along with them originals and self-attested photocopies of educational mark sheets, date of birth proof, qualification, experience and caste certificates, self-attested photographs and 4 sets of complete bio-data. A merit list is published on the website post which an offer is made to the selected candidates.

Key Points

  • The positions offered by the institute are on a temporary basis, depending entirely on the duration of the project.
  • The age limit for Research Associate applicants is 40 years for men and 45 years for women, whereas for Junior Research Fellow, Senior Research Fellow and Field Assistant applicants the age limit is 35 years for men and 40 years for women.
  • Age relaxation is allowed for reserved category candidates.

  • The candidates must carry the following documents for the interview:-
