The college offers dental courses of BDS, MDS at UG and PG level. Additionally, it also offers diploma and doctoral courses. The college was established in 1953. However, the institute got its present name in 1992. Tamil Nadu Government Dental College and Hospital is affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai.

Candidates applying for BDS course should have obtained not less than 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology / Botany and Zoology taken together at the HSC. For SC/ST candidates 10% relaxation is provided in eligibility criteria.
Selection to the BDS course is through NEET UG entrance exam. Merit list will be declared by Selection Committee of Tamil Nadu Government. NEET-UG will be conducted by CBSE for admission in MBBS and BDS courses. The NEET-UG will be conducted on May 7.
Admission to two diploma courses is based on merit of Class X.

Key Points for BDS Admission:
- Candidates applying should have completed the 17 years of the age on or before 31 December.
- 85% seats are reserved for candidates who have passed HSC from Tamil Nadu Board whereas 15% of the total seats are reserved under all India Quota.

Tamil Nadu Government Dental College and Hospital offers MDS course in eight disciplines, candidates applying to these courses should have done BDS from a recognized university and should have done one-year compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI).
Selection to the course is based on NEET PG entrance exam. 50% of the total seats are reserved under all India Quota; rest seats are available under state quota. However, admission to seats under both quotas is through NEET PG only.

Key Points for MDS Admission:
- Candidates who are completing or likely to complete their internship after March 31, are not eligible to apply.
- Candidates who complete CRRI in other States are not eligible.
- Already serving candidates who are selected by TNPSC/MRB (through Competitive Written Examination) and who have put in less than two-year of continuous service as on March 31, either in Tamil Nadu Medical Service or in Local Bodies is not eligible to apply MDS Courses.

The college offers Ph.D. degree in Prosthodontics, Oral Medicine and Radiology with six seats in total.
Selection is based on qualifying exam and interview. For admission to Ph.D. course candidates should have done MDS from a recognized institution.

For BDS:
Candidates seeking admission need to follow the given steps:
- Visit the College and buy the application form.
- Fill the application form.
- Pay the application fees through Demand Draft of INR 500 drawn in favor of “The Secretary, Selection Committee" Kilpauk Chennai-10 payable at Chennai.
- Filled-in application form with the necessary enclosures has to be sent on or before July 8, by 5.00 P.M. to the following address:

For MDS:
MDS applicants need to follow following steps:
- Visit the website of TN Selection Committee, Directorate of Medical College and fill the online application form.
- Sent the application form along with the necessary documents and Demand Draft of INR 3000 drawn in favor of “The Secretary, Selection Committee" Kilpauk Chennai-10 payable at Chennai. The application form should reach on or before April 05, 5.00 P.M.
Note: Candidates seeking admission under Special Category shall submit the separate Special Category form along with the main application form available along with the Prospectus on payment of an additional fees of INR 100 by Demand Draft.
