AISSMS COE

Dr. Dattatraya Bormane is the Principal at AISSMS COE. He brings with him over three decades of experience and is well-versed in the education sector. His ideology emphasizes on imparting pragmatic learning to the students. Read here what he has to say in his interview.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“Education is the sector of transformation”

I am in the education sector by choice since transforming the nation’s youth and the future is a noble deed. I understand how deprived of resources students are who come from a rural background. Thus, to uplift their standards and help them lead a good life in the future, I ensure that they learn and progress. The journey has been long. It’s been thirty years since I am serving the education sector. I started my career as a Lecturer and soon climbed the ladder and became Principal in the same Institute. I always wish to contribute in some or other way to enrich the education sector of India.

What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way”

I believe in entrusting and empowering my teams with compassion and empathy. A good leader should take little more than his share of the blame and slightly less than his share of the credit. He should have enough open-mindedness to understand their followers’ motivations, hopes, dreams, and problems so that they can forge a deep personal connection with them.

I am responsible for taking the Institute and all stakeholders to newer heights while walking on meeting the Vision, Mission, and Goals of the Institute. I thoroughly know that people are the essential constituents of the Organization, and a motivated employee does wonders. I keep myself updated with new technologies and remain open to new ideas and innovative approaches. The best practices are always shared and appreciated at all levels. We can achieve our targets and set new goals through our robust organizational structure. The policies are decided with a lot of deliberations and implemented, frequently reviewed, and continuously improved. It helps us to achieve the goals we have set for ourselves.

The education systems in India and other foreign countries are structured very differently. What are your views upon it?

“There is a lack of hands-on experience in the Indian education system”

The education systems in India and other foreign countries are structured very differently. In India, the education system lags in hands-on experience. We at AISSMS COE, affiliated to SPPU, follow the curriculum designed by SPPU. Still, we did not stop and blame the slow process of curriculum modification. Instead, we take the unique initiative to achieve excellence in the teaching-learning process and improve our students' learning experience. Our well-qualified faculty members find the curriculum gap and bridge it through their expertise and expert sessions from professionals practicing in that field. This way, we keep our students updated and provide them real-life experience through sandwich industrial training, internships, projects, etc. We have constituted the Department Advisory Board, which comprises Alumni, parents, Industry, and Academics experts, for taking their advice on activities for students' wellbeing.

How does your curriculum ensure the best industry practices?

“We have initiatives that help to bridge the gap between the Institute and the industry”

To meet the changing requirements of industry and emerging technology, our Faculty members contribute a lot in the development of the curriculum as six of them are members of the Board of Studies of SPPU, Pune. The faculty members contribute to design and develop curriculum at various levels such as BOS, Academic Council, subject chairman, etc., for curriculum enrichment.

One of the best things about the University is that there is a provision to add courses based on cutting-edge technologies through open elective courses. Recently the E&TC department of AISSMSCOE has submitted a proposal on Intelligent Automation which is approved by BOS and the Academic council of SPPU. This provision meets industrial requirements.

To imbibe self and continuous learning, the Institute promotes MOOC platforms viz. NPTEL, SWAYAM, Coursera, and peer learning and collaborative learning on the latest technical topics. Students are motivated to join industrial internships during summer and winter vacations to get exposure to industry environments to learn the current cutting-edge technologies. We invite national and International Industrial experts to deliberate the current technologies, trends, and expectations of the real world.

What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the Institute and the students are?

“It is essential to counter and resolve challenges of the students”

My role as the Head of the Institute is the overall development of the student who shall be ready to face and successfully meet any challenges in the chosen career. I need to take care of and fulfil the expectations of all stakeholders. Though regulatory bodies prescribe the roles and duties, I feel that I need to surpass the expectation and provide an avenue to every element in the system to continuously grow to newer heights. My simple philosophy states that each one has his/her capabilities and limitations; my role is to enhance the capabilities while overcoming the hurdles. As the Institute flourishes, the stakeholders are benefitted and vice-versa. These things are more comfortable for the state than practice, but I could make it possible with empathy and futuristic thinking.

What do you think should be the AISSMS COE’s top priority over the next 10 years?

“There are multiple domains we want to expand our horizons”

We are already walking on the path of making our Students and Faculty ready to meet all the unknown challenges posed by the uncertain state of the whole world. Once this is achieved, progress is bound to happen. We are already at a level that any Engineering Institutes vouch for; accreditation from NBA, NAAC and getting Autonomy is something we are planning and are confident of achieving soon. To speak about the priority for the long term, I plan to institute a live research and entrepreneurship center with facilities of state-of-the-art consultancies. Faculty and Students will be practicing these things and will be technically and financially very strong.

What do you see as AISSMSCOE College’s greatest strengths?

“Meticulous strategic planning is executed for development of the institution”

The work culture is very cohesive, welcoming, and supportive as all follow the AISSMS COE’s futuristically visualized vision and missions. It exhibits affordability of education with features viz. quality academics, infrastructure, research laboratories, industry-interaction, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

The well-established process is implemented to excel in comprehensive development through transparency in academic governance. The established organizational structure executes smooth functioning of administrative and academic processes assisted with e-governance.

Faculty/staff get the benefit of sponsorship for higher studies and other facilities. AISSMS COE satisfies the needs of society through the involvement of each one in the process. The governance of Governing Body (GB), College Development Committee (CDC), Department Advisory Board (DAB), and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) play a significant role in the evolutionary reforms towards positioning the Institute in the preferred list of all stakeholders.

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

“Take wise career decisions”

All the streams have equal opportunities. No stream is Superior to others. There is tremendous scope for all Streams. It’s only the proper attitude and inclination to learn that makes a difference.

In India, we have a rich heritage of knowledge and indigenous technology, which is unknown to the world. We need to go back to our roots. A lot of experience is available in local languages. We as Engineers need to provide a proper interface between the Knowledge and Technology and showcase it to the world.

What are some plans that you’re currently (or will be) designing for All Indian Shri Shivaji Memorial Society’s College of Engineering international affairs and/or students?

“We are looking for multiple collaborations for the future”

We have good collaboration with many International Organisations and MoUs as well. The constant interaction is fetching many opportunities for Faculty and Students to participate in Research and Higher studies. We have got several grants through these initiatives, which are useful for UG, PG, Ph.D., and Post-Doctoral research. We are planning to have dual degree courses with top 100 reputed International Institutes. Establishment of Incubation Centre so that students can start their start-ups, Centre of excellence in some of the Cutting-Edge technologies (IOT, AI, Data Science, Robotics, etc.).
