Ms. Shivani Chauhan is presently serving as Asst Professor, Computer Science & Engineering at Shivalik College of Engineering, Dehradun. Having several years of work experience as a professor and lecturer in many national institutions, she has published two research papers in International journals of repute. Also, she has been awarded a GATE scholarship by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in 2013.

What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students? 

“Academic mentoring and industrial practices for their growth”

I guide my students in their performance of practical tasks and skill exercises to help them gain necessary skills. We have a well-designed system to evaluate each student’s performance as well. We advise and assist the students in their project work, and prepare applicable course material to make it industry-relevant for our students. We also encourage our students to participate in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that enhance their overall development.


How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and faculty?

“Mutual respect and encouraging social behaviors”

Teaching with much enthusiasm and passion, incorporating interesting and inclusive pedagogies helps in establishing keen participation of students in the classrooms, developing mutual understanding between staff and students. Treating each member with respect and solving their grievances, having a positive attitude and coordination in work generates faith and trust among the team. 


How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects?

“Filling the gap between curriculum and industry demands”

Workshops, Guest Lectures, SDPs, and Industrial Visits are organized in the campus on a regular basis to expose students to various industrial practices and knowledge. Value Added Courses, Seminars, Case Studies & Projects, Student Development Programs and Induction Program on latest technology provides a hands-on experience and skill enrichment in students.

How do you help your students to cope up with the competitive scenario outside?

“Practical activities to train and boost students with skills and confidence”

Regular training is provided for Quantitative Aptitude, Analytical Reasoning and Personality Development of students along with course curriculum. Soft Skill Training, Industrial tours and Experts training provided by ICT Academy, Alumni Champion Talk, Live Project Events and 24 Hour Coding Event are a few activities that boost the confidence of students and motivate them for healthy competition in the real world. Technical Events conducted by SCAS (Shivalik Computation and Automation Society) of CSE Department and ‘Earn While You Learn’ - Internship Program for students, aid them with necessary skills and knowledge to face the challenges of real life.


What are the approaches you bring in to train the students? 

“Skill management and enhancement activities”

Our curriculum strategy is a combination of Course-enrichment and Course- assessment pedagogy done by practicing Outcome-Based Education (OBE). The intent of OBE is continuous improvement and enhancement where outcomes are briefly analyzed, helping to improve pitfalls and leading to uninterrupted growth. Also, peer tutoring, coding events, student-centered learning and instruction, effective collaborative and technology-enhanced learning and inquiry-based instruction are utilized to guide students in the respective fields. 


What do you see as the department’s greatest strengths?

“Student-centered learning and instruction approaches”

Our college has a unique centre called Shivalik Computation and Automation Society (SCAS) and has collaborated with ICT Academy that offering more practical learning approaches. We bestow our students with the best learning methodologies leaving no stone unturned for their professional development. We create opportunities for cooperative learning and inter-departmental projects, industry-oriented workshops and hands-on project research to make students employable right from their college days. We put forward individual attention and responsiveness towards each of our students to ensure a better helping hand in case of grievances.
