Fr (Dr) Stephen Mavely is the Vice-Chancellor at Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU) Guwahati, Assam. He became the first Vice-Chancellor (President) of ADBU in 2008. While serving as the Principal of Don Bosco College, Guwahati, he was entrusted with the task of establishing the first Don Bosco University in India. He played a pivotal role in the conceptualisation and planning of the University. He continues to steer its development as it seeks to create for itself a unique niche among institutions of higher education.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“Being able to help mould an individual's life through education is the main motivation”

The value of one’s life depends on the people he/she influenced and helped shape through education. An educator is an enabler, who shares and touches the lives of thousands of future leaders. Hence being in the education sector, gives me constant inspiration to enlighten the lives of others.


What is your philosophy of leadership?

A visionary who inspires others while encouraging critical thinking and innovations”

At Don Bosco University, we work together as a family towards the same goal and each employee is given ample space to be creative. As a leader, I motivate my colleagues to find new solutions to old problems and be adaptive to changes. We try to provide an ethical work environment with clear values, priorities and standards. How does your university practices inclusivity towards students from different backgrounds?

We have been providing quality education to students of diverse cultural, racial and economic backgrounds”

Providing easier access to higher education for the underprivileged has been embedded in the University’s foundations. It has been one of the most important reasons for starting a University in North East India. Today, we have managed to make a total of Rs. 4.3 crores available as Scholarships based on merit, economic status and disability. Students from all walks of life are welcome here.

What do you think responsibilities to the University and the students are?

Administrative and academic developmental activities at the University”

The main roles include providing a conducive learning environment to the students and faculty members. As a Vice-Chancellor, it is my responsibility to secure the financial stability and sustainability of the University. It allows the smooth delivery of the University’s vision and mission.


What would you like people to know about your university they may not know?
