Prof. Rishi Raj Kapoor is the Dean (School of Architecture) at Mody University. He has over 27 years of experience in Architecture, Interior Designing and Project Management / Relationship Management across all types of projects. Having served these many years, he explains why an administration requires exposure and experience for an effective functioning. After working at different prominent universities, I learnt that there are many constraints of different types, different at different Universities. Hence have preconceived similar ideas for Mody University too. But to my extreme glee, I found Mody University much different. A free hand for the development of your School, with only one Bracket- “Bring it to the world Class”. Hence I started putting my best expertise and experience to bring the School of Architecture at Mody University to Numero-Uno Position with quality education and holistic development of my Students. I am really pleased to share, in a very short period I achieved a lot towards my goal for my School. As development is always a continuous process with no full stop, it will continue.

Effective functioning of an Administration requires a lot of exposure and experience

Effective Administration needs a lot of exposure and experience. Fortunately, I possess both. Working as Practicing Architect, holding office of my own, working with many Private Builders, Gov. Organizations and others for about 25 years, and approximately 10 years in academics with top Universities, gave me vision and knowledge to take up and handle key issues effectively. I believe that Students are the best ambassadors and most effective marketing personals for any School. If your client, your student , the end user is satisfied , no one can stop you from growing fast. So the first thing is to give the best and in most effective way, to the students, your end user, for which they are at your school and for which you do all marketing. But yes all Universities need good support , a fine marketing place like – “Collegedunia” to tell the world and to show the world what we are.

An architecture student is not only a learner but a producer of knowledge as well

Architecture Profession has a different role to play in society unlike other professions. Hence, architecture education is quite different from other conventional teaching methodologies. A student of architecture is not only a learner, but also a producer of knowledge. Architecture has to be appreciated as a 2nd Order Discipline. It is a Meta discipline, a critical attitude, not merely an empirical discipline like engineering that needs/seeks/works with data. 

Architecture is said to be the mother of all arts. It is a combination of all art forms and sciences. From Psychology to structure , from human behavior to behavior of materials, is to be amalgamated with creativity to produce masterpiece structure to decorate the earth crust by its own way. Hence imparting Architecture education needs a different teaching learning environment and totally different methodology, which is more oriented toward exposure and exploration rather than learning pre-established norms and systems.

Architecture is not a discipline, it is a meta discipline. Unlike other professional courses like Medical & Law where students learn to repair- You need doctors only when there is something wrong with your body, else not; Architecture is a discipline of Creativity. Students are taught to create beauty, which comes from inside out. So teaching Architecture is not merely providing knowledge of available statics and data, from outside to inside; but it's bringing out what is already within you. Augmenting the creativity which is already there, and helping the students to explore themselves. And that is why there is not a single prescribed book at any level in Architecture. There are suggestive readings and reference books. In Architecture a student has to reconnoiter their own style and ideas instead of learning from available data.

Teaching is a Noble profession. It is, and it should not be, merely the work to earn livelihood. It’s a responsible job, as it decides the future of the society and nation. And, for me its passion. Imparting knowledge and expertise and not just teaching subject is the key for any Institution or Teacher. Ethical and sincere efforts to give the best to the students for which they are with you is my motto. Thus, in return this will give back the name and fame to the Institution, resulting in waitlisted students, to the University . 

There is a high demand of Architects in the society to come up with creative designs 

Each student graduating out of the Architecture course dreams to have his/her own office and own practice and projects. They wish to see Buildings coming up, from their own office which they themselves have conceived. For me, I wish to train my students to become great Architects having their own office and become Job suppliers rather than job seekers. There are very few Architects, not even one lakh, for 1.3 hundred crore population of India. There is a huge demand for Architects in society. But for those who want to get employed, there is the demand too. Big corporates and Govt. Departments offer jobs to Architects.
